2001 Cadillac Catera - Page 9 Questions & Answers
I have 2001 catera and the back carpets are soaked
Yup;
Go in the engine compartment where the wiper parks on the passenger side, right ahead of the glove box. Pull back the rubber strip that is at the top edge. There is a plastic shield under the wiper and it comes off. Inside you will find the cabin filter. Remove the cabin filter (could use a change) and you will probably find the bottom plugged with leaves and debris. The drain hole is plugged allowing water to accumulate and pour into the passenger side foot well. Clean this out really good and run a snake wire down the drain hole to clear it. Then hose it down to wash the debris out.
Make sure you dry your carpets out really good by raising them off the floor board. The under pad once soaked, will stink the car up and rot your floors.
How do i fix my 2001 cadillac catera idle problem
The problems you are describing indicate to me that you likely need to replace the coil pack that runs from the spark plugs ,and the plug wires end up at it.It also may be the spark plug wires, get a water bottle and spray the wires after dark and if you get a light show from them then replace them,if not, replace the coil pack.
Where is the starter located in a 2001 Cadillac
Underneath the intake manifold. Usually around a 2-4 hour job for beginners. Make sure you are careful when disconnecting fuel rail so you do not get fuel in your eyes or where it could start on fire!!
Where is the starter located on a 2001 cadillac
The starter is located under the intake manifold. Remove the intake manifold and all necessary components to access it.It is advisable that while replacing the starter also replace all the gaskets with new gaskets .This helps.

Is there a special way to bleed the brake system
- Place a clean shop cloth beneath the brake master cylinder to prevent brake fluid spills.
- With the ignition OFF and the brakes cool, apply the brakes 3-5 times, or until the brake pedal effort increases significantly, in order to deplete the brake booster power reserve.
Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir with DOT-3 brake fluid from a clean, sealed brake fluid container. Ensure that the brake master cylinder reservoir remains at least half-full during this bleeding procedure. Add fluid as needed to maintain the proper level. Clean the outside of the reservoir on and around the reservoir cap prior to removing the cap and diaphragm.
- Install a proper box-end wrench onto the RIGHT REAR wheel hydraulic circuit bleeder valve.
- Install a transparent hose over the end of the bleeder valve.
- Submerge the open end of the transparent hose into a transparent container partially filled DOT-3 brake fluid from a clean, sealed brake fluid container.
- Have an assistant slowly depress the brake pedal fully and maintain steady pressure on the pedal.
- Loosen the bleeder valve to purge air from the wheel hydraulic circuit.
- Tighten the bleeder valve, then have the assistant slowly release the brake pedal.
- Wait 15 seconds, then repeat these steps until all air is purged from the same wheel hydraulic circuit.
- Repeat this procedure with the LEFT FRONT, then LEFT REAR and finally the RIGHT FRONT.
- Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir to the maximum-fill level with DOT-3 brake fluid from a clean, sealed brake fluid container.
- Slowly depress and release the brake pedal. Observe the feel of the brake pedal.
Can the bulbs be removed and changed by an owner
these are very hard to replace, there are people on ebay that you can send your cluster to and they will rebuild it,they sell the bulbs on ebay, but they dont advise that you try to change them yourself.I think they have to be soldered in.
This car just shuts down while driving after it
Hi,could be an "airlock" in the fuel tank, next time it does it open the filler and listen for any air thats rushing into the tank , if there is a suction noise the fuel tank breather could be blocked, good luck.
My speedmeter only works for about a half mile
The correct scan tool with tell you the specific issue with you ABS & TC system, AKA EBTCS, or electronic brake & traction control system. This computer system reads the speed of each wheel by sensor and magnet wheel.
If you had it scanned & replaced the sensor that was bad, then remove the wheel and take out the sensor by hand. Look in the hole in the wheel hub and inspect the wheel magnets for any damage or corrosion. This can be replaced if damaged. Apply a small amount of bearing grease to sensor and reinstall.
If your scan shows a comunication problem with the control module, then it can be easily removed and repaired for under $200 at modulemaster.com
Air or contamination in the brake system can also cause an issue. Bleeding the ABS module takes a command from a scan tool, and it will pump for 10 seconds. Make sure you have a bleeder open on one of the calipers. Then bleed out all the brakes by pumping the pedal and hold, then release pressure in line by unscrewing bleeder screw and closing it after 2 seconds, then release brake. Repeat a few times, and listen for air bubbles to go away, if any.
Good Luck!
