Hard to start when it's cold outside

Has the car had new spark plugs lately? Usually hard starting in cold weather is caused by too heavy of oil or worn out spark plugs.

Idles high, running temperature is 225 degrees and

hi,

are you familiar with the northstar engine?
first generation northstars are notorious for this kind of thing..
the engine is prone for metal fatigue/ warping of the heads, and stripped out head bolts, do you have documentation and service history for it?
these engines need a good mechanic to inspect and replace head bolts which strip out and need fixing. I will post a link at the bottom
once the engine is repaired correctly it should last a good long time
have it fixed correctly. I think someone has turned up the idle knob in an attempt to get the coolant flowing quicker to keep it cool.
its worth repairing if you have the money..

Where is the thermostat located on the 1993

It is NOT on the upper radiator hose, it is where the lower hose connects next to the air filter housing. You do not need to disconnect the hose, there are two 10mm bolts that come off and the thermostat is inside this housing.

How do i change the water pump in a 93 cadillac el

I am going to assume you have the northstar engine.

First of all,you need the removal tool which looks like this.

http://www.etoolcart.com/gmnorthstarwaterpumpsocketast7880.aspx

You need to remove the air filter housing and ducting to gain easy access to the pump.

Remove the shield covering the pulley and belt. The belt is easily removed by levering the tensioner pulley.

The water pump is located at the lower radiator hose manifold where you will also find the thermostat.Remove the manifold cover and you will see the water pump.

Insert the removal tool over the pump making sure it is locked in position. You will need to use a breaker bar on the removal tool and turn the tool CLOCKWISE to release the pump (1/4 turn), or if you imagine the breaker bar being vertical, push towards the windscreen of your car,it takes quite a bit of force to unseat the pump hence the use of a breaker bar.

Installing the new pump does not require as much torque as removing the old one.Tighten the new pump to 73 ft.lbs. making sure it is seated properly before tightening.

Don't forget to clean out the water pump housing prior to installing the new pump and don't forget to include a new water pump gasket and housing cover gasket.

It is also a good idea to install a new thermostat while you're at it.

Lumpy idle when starting it in the morning, but

Possible leaking injector(s), leaking head gasket so there is water in a cylinder overnight, or coolant temp sensor reading colder than actual temperature, which would induce a flooded condition. Narrowing down the possibilities can be accomplished by asking these questions: Does the coolant level stay the same, or has it gone down? Is the check engine light ever on? How many miles are on the fuel filter, spark plugs and other regular maintainance items? Fuel is in high demand on a cold start(filter). More fuel easily shorts out a bad spark plug. Too much fuel floods an engine and causes it to run rough or die if it even starts(coolant sensor/leaking injector). Feel free to contact me with more info. Thank You.

1993 Cadillac Eldorado overheating

I am assuming you have the Northstar engine.

Check for coolant flow at the Purge line, this is a common problem on the Northstar.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank, this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating. If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.

Are you running it without a thermostat? If so,then strangely enough, this will cause overheating as the Northstar cooling system is different to most conventional systems and therefore will not help you diagnose the problem.
