Alternator or Voltage regulator?

I have a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee. For about a week now, the Voltage Meter has been on the low side of where it normally runs. We decided to ignore it…maybe it’s yet another quirky Jeep thing. Also, the Check Engine light came on intermittently. Other than that, the Jeep seemed to run fine. Today, we took a family outing. As soon as we got about 15 miles from home, we noticed that the Voltage meter started dropping into the “orange”. Still, the truck ran just fine. As we continued on, the AIRBAG light came on and stayed on. Next, the ABS light came on and stayed on. Somewhere during all this, the Voltage meter dropped all the way down and stayed there. No reading at all. Also, the Speedometer and Odometer dropped to “0”, jumped back up a few times, and then eventually dropped back to “0” and stayed there. The radio (Volume only) quit. The radio had juice because the station number and antennae still worked…just no Volume. Also, the Message console lights went out. Soon after all of this happened, and as I was slowing down (to approx. 35 mph), I could feel the truck start to studder and I knew it was going to shut off. I managed to drift into a gas station that happened to be on my left side. The steering and brakes were both very hard to engage. The battery is dead, so we are recharging it right now.
Do you think this sounds like the Alternator or the Voltage regulator, or something else?
Thank-you!
Lori

Hello, with much satisfaction as of now, I am happy to say I have fixed this problem yesterday. I did so by continuing to read through these message boards, put certain ideas together and figure it out. We all know by now Jeep has ridiculous flaws, how a recall was never ordered, we may never know.
In any case, Jeep has a defective internal Security System. Once malfunctions begin to occur, it is all down hill from there. It cause Battery drainage even after changing battery. Simply remove the fuses for the security system. They are located on the pasanger side, on the right hand side of glove box there is a panel, remove it and find fuses # 6 and # 7. Take them out and Problem is solved.
I have tried everything from the wiring in door panel, wiring in foot panel and everything else that was suggested, It all finally came to an end one the fuses were removed. Good Luck and I hope this helps

check the kickdown/throttle valve cable. It may be bound up and stuck in the maximum position giving you extremely late shifts.

Are you getting spark from coil wire when cranking? If so, check the cap & rotor. If not, the most common failure is the crank sensor. If you have a 4,0, you can find it on the drivers side of the bellhousing, in line with the flywheel, just where it's annoying to work on. There is a test you can make, but I don't have the specific test values or the correct terminals to check. (you can find that info in any half decent manual.
Good luck

There could be two problems here:
1. That buoy floating tank is not working properly
2. That the electrical system that fails to submit the dashboard.

my 93 jeep grand cherokee service 4wd switch is

my 93 jeep grand cherokee service 4wd switch is on. what does this mean ?

Hey there, The driver info center in the 93 grand cherokee's is notorious for this message. This switch is on the transfer case and its only purpose is to tell that display what 4 wheel drive mode you are in (eg. 2 wheel, 4 wheel high, 4 wheel low, etc.) This can mean the switch bad but is USUALLY cause by a short in the display module itself. This will not affect anything on your Jeep. It is merely for driver information only. This is a very common problem and if you have a 93 in which the display is working at all your are lucky. They are very bad about going completely out over time.

Jeep cherokee headlights flicker flash

After a random time headlights begin to flicker. High beams cause it to start flashing sooner. Occasionally the flash on lowbeam- but only after about a half hour or more of driving. They would flash for about 15 seconds and then return to normal(lowbeam). High beam will keep it flickering, and they seem to stay "out" for a longer period of time. The headlight switch has been replaced twice - not the issue. Anything found from a google search of "jeep Cherokee headlights flashing" has not worked. Have not done anything with corrosion yet, or the dimmer switch(hi/lo switch).

The fuse box is located under the hood on the pass. side next to the coolant tank. There is also a "relay" box under the lining in the glove box. Also check for an interior fuse box under the drivers side dash next to the L. side of the steering column. 93-98 G Cherokees are all similar. Make sure you have also double checked your ground!!! :)a15ecc7b-bec4-487c-b71c-4f8ef042564f.jpg ab492135-6922-4434-aab4-05530fd8f785.jpg f7ad767c-6a40-489f-b34d-e6def9cf58ae.jpg ff77525b-6d71-4d8c-93aa-b811fcdf5310.jpg d2b3538e-dd53-4337-b160-594ea5192e13.jpg aa76651f-991a-4c27-aa54-315ec14a887c.jpg
