1987 Plymouth Caravelle Questions & Answers
'87 Plymouth Caravelle vacuum hoses crumbled.
in 1987 hoses were not hard when new
harden and perish due to heat in engine bay and age
I dont think you can buy hoses as a kit
but worth ringing a plymoth Caravelle parts supplier
you can buy silicone or standard rubber hose
replace one hose at a time and take pictures of the hose joins
don't pull the lot off in one go and have a mess
cheapest way to replace all vacuum hoses is buy the hosing in lengths and sizes required from an auto parts shop
Heating
Please, send us other details and description of the problem. Also included car features.
Replaced timing belt on '87
Have you double-checked the engine timing with a timing light to see whether everything came together properly? Your symptoms sound like the head might also have shifted when you slipped off the old belt or the new timing belt may have jumped a tooth when you first restarted the engine. Either way, a mismatch between the actual position of the valves and the spark sequence would cause a profound lack of power and / or symptoms like backfiring and other issues.
If your timing is way off, the right way to fix things would be to take the belt off again and move the head one gear forward or back from where it was. I would recommend against using the timing advance/****** of the distributor to try to reduce these symptoms until you got your primary timing issues resolved. Right now, you probably haven't damaged anything in your valve train, but extended operation with the engine not in sync with itself will put significant strain on some of the components.
Clicks when turning the key,
will try to help. with headlights on and then try to start do head lights go dim? if so,try jump start with booster cables from another car. lights don't go dim? check starter connections for loose or burnt wires. all that good? suggest you replace the starter. if engine turns over,it's not your starter. sorry, but have to ask just to be sure we've covered all the bases.did you check for a bad starter fuse before anything? had to ask. bad starter colenoids click which means they are trying to start, but the starter bendix is'nt kicking out to turn the engine over. hope this helps and as always thank you for choosing fixya.com
I need to know where the flasher unit is on my 87
Hello cmason1.
If you are speaking of the signal light flasher it is located in your fuse panel which is under your instrument panel on the left of the steering column.
The hazard warning flasher is clipped to the instrument panel below the fuse block.
I hope this leads you to your repair.
Cannot locate an idle control
There isno need to remove the valve to clean it, do the following procedure to cure the sludge problem.
To correct this problem get a can of Throttle Body cleaner (it is made by CRC) from the local auto parts store, spray it into the air intake of the engine while it is running until you have used about half the can, you will need to hold the idle up while you do this, it will try to stall, after this shut the engine down and disconnect the Negative (-) battery cable for 5 minutes. The intake is now clean, if you continue to have the idle speeds problems you may need to seek the help of a professional.

Can I access the fuel
no,you'll need to jack it up,put it on stands then drop gas tank.the more fuel in the tank, the heavier it will be. i would look under the hood in main fuse box and check for blown fuses and relays, before you drop that fuel tank 1st though. hope this helps, and if you need further assistance please repost your question, please give year, make, model, and engine size if possible when asking for assistance please.
