This sounds like a bad idle air control valve, but also make sure the throtlebody is clean, use a toothbrush and some throtlebody cleaner, spray and clean with brush, make sure to open plate by having someone hold gas pedal to floor, after cleaning if truck still stalls then replace the idle air control valve,

1996 was a hybrid year for the cherokee, they started using the newer computers in half of the jeeps...you can plug in your vin to see if you have the newer one, if you don't, you can put a 95 or older computer in it without flashing it. Do you have any codes?

That year jeep has had problems with the fuse panel being loose and the connections between the two halves are intermittent.

CEL means check engine lamp. it must glow, key on. 3: then SKIM lamp if car has security, feature it must glow then go out and not flash, nor stay one while cranking, if it does key secuity. i think only Europe had this in 1996 , not USA> aka: VTA,VTSS,SKIM and SKIL (or in English IMMO LAMP) as in immobilized, if in uSA its not there. best guess.. the 2second rules applies to all jeeps. on usa cars, the ASD relay It may fail to energize if yes, fails, then spark is ended. the ASD relay pulls in (energizes) and you crank then the ASD drops before engine starts or runs for 2seconds and stop, if YES< that means the PCM (ecu) did that on purpose and only SCANNING the PCM with any scan tool ever made 1996 to now, USA, works. all do. scan it. see DTC errors, bingo why ASD drops there are 7 reasons for the DROP and all show a DTC error. http://jeepdied.com/ASD.html

Hit in the rear axle may have damaged bearings or brake parts. Jack up the side you hear noise from, put on stand, then have helper rotate wheel while you look underneath and listen to see where noise is coming from. Use length of old fuel or heater hose, one end in ear, to locate exactly where noise comes from.

If the fuel filters have not been changed, start there. You can visually check fuel flow during this process.

which one? if the rear transmission, it just is a conn, and 1 screw. a 96 -2006 sure. 42RE transmission or what? there are 2. why not post the DTC error so we can be on the same page,? page 191 covers it here , under tranny some cars have up to 4 speed sensors, 2 on engine and 2 in tranny. so... guessing page p191 tail there is also a backup sensor for that. so..... post DTC error and WIN, speed sensors means zero. my guys is net rumor told you trans shifts bad and is VSS bad? or did you scan it and see a live error, DTC, that be best, not rumors, (and do clean it and retest )

The sensor is located on the exhaust system between where the cylinder ports enter the common manifold and the muffler. Sometimes they are on the cast iron manifold and sometimes they are on the exhaust pipe after the cast iron manifold.

You have a dead short and yes it could be in one of the door lock switches, figure out which one is blowing the fuses and take it out, might just have a wire that came loose in the back and is causing it to short out when you hit the switch button.

You have two oxygen sensors but 21 is upstream sensor. This is the sensor between engine and catalytic converter. There is three possible problems that it could be. 1 oxygen sensor input voltage maintained above the normal operating range. 2 no signal at 02 2/1 sensor 3 oxygen sensor input voltage sustained above thenormal operating range. What all this means is you need to replace the sensor. when getting the replacement this is your O2 2/1 sensor.

I suggest you purchase a Haynes manual from a local auto parts store. It will walk you through every step. Haynes manuals are not very expensive but do a descent job. Make sure you get the one for your specific vehicle.

Could be a problem with the key switch or a relay. You can check the ignition and fuel pump circuits with a meter and see if you are loosing power from the key switch when you let go of the key.

THE CATALYTIC CONVERTOR IS IN LINE IN THE EXHAUST. ON A CHEROKEE THEY ARE LOCATED APPROXIMATLY UNDER THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, UNDER THE VEHICLE. THEY ARE COMMONLY REMOVED BECAUSE THEY CAN BECOME PLUGGED UP AND CAUSE EXHAUST RESTRICTIONS. THEY HAVE VARIOUS SHAPES AND SIZES. THEY SOMEWHAT RESEMBLE A MUFFLER.

I would expect a vacuum leak at inlet manifold.
