stalls , moving, only. at stop lights or between gears.

its more likely to be a wiring problem, check the earth wire on pump wiring to the shell, and check the live feed to the relay. if either one of them does not work or give a good signal on meter replace the fee cable. ols wires can crack or become oxidised and will need to be replaced or patched best to replace the hole wire, also check the earthing wires location as this is also a area of rust and corrosion, it would be best to make a new earth around the pump area out of weather areas.

a stick shift.
ok ill do stick shift 101..... (repaired many a box i have)
first off it can be 3 things, the stick bad. the box and the clutch.
so can you shift all gears , engine off, and parked.?
Q1: yes/no.?
if yes, can you shift to 2nd gear, parked & engine off
and then start engine and move in second gear using the clutch pedal.?
ill stop here, as most get lost , if i post the full diagnosis..... end.
we can go way beyond this. easy.

why? state symptoms first then ask questions.
after all , some bark up wrong tree?

4 liter?
2wd or 4wd?
the FSm book cover this.
it like 50 steps.

  • battery neg lug off..
  • drain xfr case then transmission. 4wd guessing, i am
  • drop drive shafts.
  • drop drop cross members (i did a 88 last jeep done)
  • put tranny jack in place. below trans.
  • all cables and hoses, connnectors off trans and transfer case,(obvious) OFF
  • remove bell bolts bottom and top last. (avoid cantilevering trans off bottom bolts )
  • slide trans back,
  • end story, as the remainder is abvious back in.

is this your first, trans?
if yes, youtube 100s of others first, then ask questions.

my 88 had a stinking coax slave cylinder deep inside, sux.

RTM,. read the manual yet,.

log in and read. and win,
avoid costly mistakes, reading fixya rumors etc.

fuses are always first.
you said no power to the coil that means 12vdc power.
so hows car run with no power to coil no electric power?
ok, seems its , running good, then you lose engine power (not usage of word engine) then you find loss of 12vdc power to the ignition coil
you blew a fuse.
1987, carb engine
no engine stated, making any spark help near impossible
2.5L Vin H, TBI injection
4.2.L Vin C, 2bbl carb.
apples and oranges different (huge difference)

the 4.2 liter gets power from a ballast resistor.
on the yellow wire . the igntion switch feeds the this resistor
the green wire, goes to the ignition module.
this wire reads 12v key on, then when cranked, or running
the module grounds the green wire for about 5/1000s of second
and then release this ground making Inductive spark (Tesla action)
. that is how the 4.2 works.

so what engine.?? some have 4.0 engine. so???

1987 Jeep... | Answered on Sep 20, 2014

muffler explosion
is caused by 2 things
air entering the exhaust (leaks )
and gross engine fuel controls out of control, a very rich conditon
there is no person on earth can guess why.
a tech, would do about 10 tests, and find the cause, then the part.
87 is a water shed year.
is your car CARB or EFI. some were CARB. so what engine size
and which fuel system. ?????

is this your car engine, (wild guess) USA cars only not export Jeeps.

The throttle body fuel injection is used on 1987-90 Wranglers equipped with the 2.5L engine and is a "pulse time'' system that uses a single solenoid-type injector to meter fuel into the throttle body above the throttle plate. Fuel is metered to the engine by an Electronic Control Unit (ECU),
