How to check & change oil in automatic transmission on a 2001 Audi A6

At the bottom of the automatic gearbox (tiptronic) you will find 2 threaded plugs on below surface. First (in front of the car) is for emptying, and second is for filling up. Tightening torque is 24 Nm.

tdisline_465.jpg
Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) checking:
1. Requirements for check:
1.1. Vehicle standing on level surface.
1.2. Transmission must not be in fail-safe mode.
1.3. Shift lever in "P" position, parking brake applied.
1.4. Engine idling.
1.5. Air Conditioner and heater OFF.
1.6. ATF temperature must not exceed 104 Fahrenheit degree (40 Celsius degree) at start of test.
1.7. Only ATF with designation ESSO LT 71 141 may be used. Do not use any lubricant additives.
1.8. Automatic Transmission Fluid ATF - part number: G 052 162 A2 (1 liter wrapping)
1.9. An ATF level check when transmission oil temperature is too low results in overfilling, when too high results in underfilling.
2. CAUTION: Too much or too little ATF will affect the operation of the transmission. The ATF level must be checked at regular intervals.
3. The oil level is correct if a slight amount of oil runs out when ATF temperature is between 86 Fahrenheit degree (30 Celsius degree) and 113 F deg (45 C deg) (caused by increase of oil level when heated). For warmer climates, 122 F deg (50 C deg).
4. Hang filled ATF reservoir VAG 1924 as high as possible.
5. Shift lever in "P" position, engine running at idle.
6. Place oil drip pan under transmission oil pan.
7. Remove ATF filler plug (at the bottom of the automatic gearbox you will find 2 threaded plugs on below surface. First (in front of the car) is for emptying, and second is for filling up.
8. With ATF temperature between 86 Fahrenheit degree (30 Celsius degree) and 113 F deg (45 C deg), for warmer climates, 122 F deg (50 C deg), a slight amount of oil will flow from filler hole when ATF level is correct.
9. If necessary drain or top off ATF to attain correct oil level. Top ATF with filler hook from VAG 1924 ATF reservoir. Insert VAG 1924 (tool) ATF reservoir filler hook into filler hole and top off until a slight amount of oil flows from filler hole.
NOTE: Fit filler hook into one of the oil deflector cap slots placed on the filler opening.
CAUTION: Do not press filler hook upward or oil deflector cap can be pushed off.
10. Reinstall ATF filler plug. Tightening torque is 24 Nm.

AUDI A6 WINDOW PROBLEMS

my 2000 audi a6 power windows woulnt work

This is a common problem with the C5 A6 models. Before you replace the fuse for the windows (I think it's number 14, but i don't have a manual in front of me - Anyway, it's the 10A fuse that's blown!) Look under the back of both front seats and you'll see a light that illuminates the floor for the back seats. Rem ove the light from each seat by prying it out with a flat screwdriver and disconnect both leads. Replace the fuse, and your windows (moon roof and interior lights as well) should now work. The lumbar support causes something to short out the lights. I've tried insulating the lights on mine, but the problem always comes back so I just disconnected them altogether.

A6 2.5 tdi possible injector pump failure or timing slip

I have just bought myself a very nice A6 Avant 2.5 tdi on a X reg 2000
the problem being after taking out for a test drive in which it ran a drove lovely then buying it & having to wait a week to pick it up,
when i came to pick it up the dealer drove it round & it was very noisy on which i remarked on, i know diesels are noisy but this was like a knock but it did quieten slightly after a about 10 minutes, then there was lots of smoke from the exhaust as i put my toe down,
I only got 2 miles from where i had bought it from i pulled into the garage & filled up with a full tank of diesel the thing wouldn't start! then it started i moved 10 ft or so to the air pump, then it would not start for love or money, tried jump leads on it as them battery died, then got the RAC out,
it fired on easy star but would not run, the there was fuel getting up to injector pump but low pressure, bypassed the fuel lines & put a direct feed to the injector pump still would not start,
then done a fault code reading which gave 1374 PUMP Timing & 505 INJECTOR COMMENCING OUT OF RANGE, on which they diagnosed a possible timing belt slip!
On getting towed back to the dealer i bought it off i left it with them, they charged the battery over night & it started straight away the next morning & ran fine far a good half hr or so, but they tried to start it that Afternoon & the problem was back!
They had a mechanic out to look at it & he said it was the pump in the diesel tank & it had to be removed & drained to fit a new pump.
but in my mind if there as been a direct feed to the injector pump then all of the fuel system as been bypassed so eliminating the problem being in the fuel tank? plus i am sure you can get to the components in the fuel tank via a panel in the boot, so this makes me very suspicious on what the mechanic is saying.

I know this quite long winded but i need what advice i can get & decide to try & get my money back or not.

I had the same sort of problem withmy A^ 2.5 TDI sports, after the dealer spending approx 1200 quid the problem was still there .
Does the waring light on the dash [glow plug symbol] show under hard acceleration?
After all the so called UK Bosch and Audi -VW experts diagnostics failed to find the fault including changing the sensor injector on NO2 cyl the problem was located by myself after giving up on so called experts { X being un known, spert being drip under pressure] all of the symptoms dissapeared when the fuel tank screen was removed and cleanned, the screen had a 2mm covering that looked like a rubber flap. Some 30,000 miles on all is perfect.

audi engine oil leak?

Hi,

My car has been sitting in my garage for the last few weeks, becuase I am trying to sell it. Recently, 3 months ago, I had the timing belt changed.

Yesterday, I started my car to let it run a little. when I shut it off I saw smoke coming from the engine. On the drivers side of the engine. I noticed engine oil leaking up by the upper bolts.

The car isn't smoking out of the exaust. I am concerned, because it has just been sitting there.

Sounds like a leaking valve cover gasket. The parts are around $50 to do both cylinder heads from www.ecstuning.com. It's not a major issue, but it may be a sore point to a potential buyer.

how to replace a thermostat in a 2000 audi a6

how to replace a thermostat in a 2000 audi a6 quattro 2.8

It's a BIG job involving the removal of the front of the car. If you need to change the thermostat, you may as well go ahead and do the timing service (timing belt, t-belt tensioner/relay/arm/tensioner roller, idler roller, water pump, coolant, and serpentine belt), since the front of the car comes off and the timing system must be basically removed. You can get the thermostat out without pulling the timing belt off, but you may as well do the service to avoid duplicating the labor. I changed the thermostat on my A4 two months ago (same engine you have), and the only reason I didn't do the timing system too was that I did that over the summer. Here's a couple pictures of what is involved in changing it (your A6 requires the same disassembly as my A4 - just copy and paste):

The removal necessary:

The hole in the center of the picture, behind the timing belt, where the two sections of the belt get very close, is where the thermostat sits:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2456/4026320040_32ef32e2d2_m.jpg

I was able to change it by pulling the timing belt about halfway out off the cam sprocket on the passenger side, and then removed the two 10mm bolts that hold the coolant channeling panel over the thermostat (in the second picture, that piece is the silver metal panel that is to the left and below the hole where the thermostat sits - I put a screwdriver against it, and tapped it out of the way with a hammer).

It's a complicated job, and takes several hours if you're familiar with it. If you don't want to take this on yourself, and you're near upstate NY, reply with a comment here and let me know - I can do the job for you. If that doesn't work out, join www.audiforums.com and search out members who are local to you - one of them may be willing to work on the car with you.

You must first erase what's in the memory.
1.) Simultaneously press both buttons 1 and 3 on the Audi's built-in remote. Hold them until the indicator light flashes (20 seconds or longer).
2.) Now hold your garage door remote close to the Audi remote.
3.) Simultaneously press and hold both your garage door remote button and the button you would like programmed. The indicator light will first flash slowly then rapidly.
4.) You may release both buttons once the light flashes rapidly.
