Could be an issues with the Mass Airflow sensor and the idle valve. If the vechile is setting off a check engine light take it into Auto Zone or a similar store they will scan the codes for free and give you a print out of what is wrong

vacuum leak sounds right. It might be inside the booster. Try plugging the line to the booster to see if it idles better. Or listen carefully under the dash for a hiss when you push on the brake.

You need to take the head off, and you need a valve spring compressor. Basically the valve spring compressor is like a big clamp, as you clamp the spring you will need to be careful as two small collets will fall out. They are small half cone shaped items. When you pull the collets out, slowly release the compressor then take off the top plate and remove the spring/s (sometimes there is a smaller spring inside the bigger spring.). Take off all the springs and then gently remove the valve. Repeat for all other vavles.One word of caution, grab a piece of cardboard. Say the top ears of a box mark numbers on it. If it is a 4 cyl and only has 2 valves per cylinder. Then you will need to mark it as cyl 1 in ex and then put each valve at the corresponding place. Inlet valve goes under the in mark. Or just get a permanant marker and mark the face of each. This way you won't mix them up.

Is your key badly worn? A new copy might work better.
