2005 Xterra - has done this twice now. After

Great truck by the way! Possible cam sensor malfuntion, located at the back of the cylinder head. I'd check the connector first, just disconnect and visually inspect. If it looks corroded or dirty, you may use WD-40 on both the sensor and harness connectors. Check the wires going into the connector for wear. Reconnecting may correct the problem. Check the simplest first. Get that code read as well, most auto parts stores will read it for free.

Get a Factory Service Manual, it can help diagnose and explain how to remove and replace parts. Here is a link to your 2005 Xterra Service Manual.

Transmission is stuck in 3rd

check your coolant fluid in the radiator and coolant pressure tank on side of the fender. nissan has some issue where coolant mixes with trans fluid in trans and the transmission goes south. if your coolant is not nice and green, than it mixed with trans fluid and your trans along with the radiator will have to be replaced. also check your trans fluid and make sure its nice and red, not pink and milky like strawberry milk. that is another sign of radiator cooler failure. start there and let me know what you find.

How to check fuel pump

Hi,

Improve the Fixya.com experience for everyone by voting!

The following is the cheapest and easiest way to check your fuel pressure and it's a five minute job.
  • Check the fuel pressure with a loaner fuel pressure gauge from AutoZone. It's FREE and comes with full instructions
  • Your reading should be 40-45 PSI and holding steady.
  • Contaminated fuel is a constant problem and if the pressure does not hold steady, replace the fuel filter.
Additional Checks:

  • Make certain that the engine thermostat is functioning and is the correct temperature.
  • Make certain that the alternator voltage output is not less than 9 volts nor more than 17 volts.

All the best

I just had a new

Hi, a new transmission will not clear a code 300. I would get that fixed before worrying about the transmission. Can you describe the noise you're hearing? I'm going to guess maybe your condenser is bad. Can you check the voltage at the ignition coils? If it's lower than battery voltage, try taking the condenser off the wire. If the voltage increases, replace the condenser. If you don't have a voltmeter, just take the condenser off and drive the car to see if it runs better. I don't have a picture of where the condenser is, but it's connected to the positive coil wire. You might have to take a cover off the engine to see it, and there may actually be 2 of them. It's a little cylinder about a dime or nickel size diameter and an inch or more long.
