1985 Volkswagen Cabriolet - Page 2 Questions & Answers
I have a 1985 cabriolet
the intake valves could be coked up with carbon (this requires walnut blasting and it is done with the head on at the dealer)
the CIS injector seals could be a vacuum leak source (spray water from a spray bottle on the injectors where they meet the head (if you hear a change in the idle the seals need to be replaced and the injector inserts need to be resealed) there are special tools to pop out the injectors and tool to unscrew the inserts
the CIS could need to be adjusted for mixture co/hc a long 3mm alan wrench is needed and an exhaust tester
the cis flap could need adjustment in the air horn make sure it is centered at rest.
Hope this helps
1985 vw cabriolet there is oil in the coolant
Not uncoomon. If you look where the oil filter is in the front of the motor by the radiator. Where the oil filter screws onto is the oil cooler and has coolant passing around it in a jacket. The oil pressure is greater than that of the cooling system pressure. Replace that cooler and flush the cooling system. This should cure it.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the thermostat to drain the cooling system.
- Remove the oil filter.
- Disconnect the hoses from the cooler.
- Remove the nut holding the cooler to the oil filter base and remove the cooler.
To install:
- Position the oil cooler, then connect the coolant hoses. Tighten the nut to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

- Fill the cooling system and connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine, allow it to warm up check for coolant leaks.

While bleeding the brakes on my 1985 vw cabriolet,
you have whats called a triangulated brake system (2xfront/1x rear)with a brake compensating valve( just in front of the rear axle)which helps to stop the rear wheels from locking, because of the different pipe lengths it is normal for this to happen.but for the life of me i cannot remember which wheel you srtart to bleed, and in what order....... (stopped working for vw 10 years ago)
My vw won't start...the engine turns over but will
you would have to look under the hood and pull the lid of the relay box and see.
i think if that was the case your fuses would be blowing, in which case a simple replacement is all you would need...50cents or a dollar a fuse. I would check the fuse/relay for the fuel pump and ignition module when you go under the hood. there should be a diagram for the fuses on the inside of the lid.
let me know if you need more help.
Fuel tank removal procedure
you are correct sir. not too easy to drop. if your tank isnt too bad you can try removing your back seat, opening the tank via sending unit cap(twist to left with large pliers) and pouring in a gallon of parts cleaner.(acetone methanol toulene) let that sit for a while and drain via hand pump(no drain...genius!) i suggest dropping it. if it has sat a while there is a chance for rust. you may notice bubbles under the black paint...this is a sure sign.begin by removing your exhaust,a recipricating saw should do the trick.sorry gonna have to weld that back.drop the rear suspension by unbolting the two bolts on both sides closest to the front.put some bricks under it or something to hold it up but let it drop as far as you can. get all of the brake lines, and fuel pump ,accumulator, filter, and hoses out of your way and just pull it right out.try not to curse. easy as that.
Can't find any parts dealers
You can buy mechanical parts at most auto parts stores. As for trim, body, roof and other parts try VW websites and magazines(Hot VW).
