Can A starter damage a flywheel or other parts of the engine? Heres the story. My wife was returning home from a trip out of town when our 1995 ford windstar made a loud pop. I inspected the vehicle and the starter was destroyed beyond belief. I replaced the starter and started the vehicle and the noise was terrible.

You need to make sure the starter is not staying engaged,if the starter is still turning, while the engine is running can damage the flywheel teeth.Look for a starter solenoid to be the problem,on the fender well.If the starter is not staying engaged, then the flywheel teeth are damaged on the flywheel.

what is the easy way to replace speed sensor windstar

if you mean the VSS...the easy way is to take it to a mechanic and pay him :)

but i have done this 2 ways. 1 is remove the catalytic and drop the rear subframe mounts, reach up and remove from there.
the other is to remove the breather and throtle body, wiper transmisson and cowling, then reach in behind and work from there.

keep in mind theres a small steel plate with 1 bolt (8mm i think) on top of the sensor which will need to be removed, then comes the job of pulling the sensor from the caseing (think pulling teeth). I normaly book 3 hrs for this job but it can be done in 1 hour if everything is not seized... the sensor its self is always hard to remove but easy to install :)

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  3. Loosen the four water pump pulley retaining bolts while the accessory drive belts are still tight.
  4. Rotate the automatic tensioner down and to the left.
  5. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  6. Remove the two nuts and bolt retaining the drive belt automatic tensioner to the engine, then remove the tensioner.
  7. Disconnect and remove the lower radiator and heater hose from the water pump.
  8. Remove the eleven water pump-to-engine retaining bolts, then lift the water pump and pulley up and out of the vehicle.
  9. Remove the water pump pulley retaining bolts, then remove the pulley from the water pump.
To install:
Be careful not to gouge the aluminum surfaces when scraping the old gasket material from the mating surfaces of the water pump and front cover.
  1. Clean the gasket surfaces on the water pump and front cover. Lightly oil all bolt and stud threads except those requiring special sealant.
  2. Position a new water pump housing gasket on the water pump sealing surface using gasket sealant to hold the gasket in place.
  3. With the water pump pulley and retaining bolts loosely installed on the water pump, align the water pump-to-engine front cover, then install the retaining bolts.
  4. Tighten the bolts to the following specifications:
    1. Bolt numbers 1-10: 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm).
    2. Bolt numbers 11-15: 71-106 inch lbs (8-12 Nm).
  5. Hand-tighten the water pump pulley retaining bolts.
  6. Install the automatic belt tensioner assembly. Tighten the two retaining nuts and bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  7. Install the alternator and power steering belts. Final tighten the water pump pulley retaining bolts to 15-22 ft. lbs. (22-30 Nm).
  8. Position the hose clamps between the alignment marks on both ends of the hose, then slide the hose on the connection. Tighten the hose clamps to 20-30 inch lbs. (2.2-3.4 Nm).
  9. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Loud knocking noise comming from engine?

Answer

1995 Ford Windstar 3.8L Engine Knocking noise on top side of engine near center of Air Plenum. Engine was completely rebuilt 2 years ago (28,000 miles on Re-Built Engine/ 156,000mile on Van). Coolant level is SAT, Engine oil level is Sat. Van was driven 2800 miles since last oil/filter change. Engine started surging as van slowed down to make a stop then engine shut off. Restarted engine and heard knocking noise. Shut engine off immediately. The oil light flickers on dash with engine running. Do fuel injectors make tapping noises when degraded? Is it possible hydraulic lifter not able to leak down or does not fill with oil? Oil pressure issue with the dash light flickering? I can see if the engine has allot of miles on it, the intake and exhaust valves begin to leak-by how ever this not the issue. Where do you start to locate engine knock noise? How is oil pressure checked to see if pressure is too low? Any help where to start would be appreciated.
