My 1985 Ford Bronco 2 is having occasional issues

A failed started does not always give us the tell tale click or thunk sounds. This is where i would begin.

It would take about 15 minutes to pull it out, after that take it to a parts store that offers free testing of these components and you will have your answer.

From what you have told me I am 99% certain this is your problem, since you have lights coming on, you can eliminate the possibility of a bad battery and since the battery is good the alternator must be as well.

A fuel issue wouldn't come into the equation when the starter is failing to engage.

Start here, if the starter tests out as good, which I'm fairly confident it won't. The next thing you have to look at is where the motor is locked up. While the starter is off the truck, use a heavy screwdriver to try to turn the torque converter, it should be very hard to move, but should move with some force, if it doesn't, the motor is a dead duck.

But as i mentioned, I'm fairly certain it is a starter issue. But if this is not the case, feel free to come on back and we can take it from there.

Thanks for using FixYa, and Good Luck.

Non start will start and run if battery is

You have a short draining the battery over long periods of time. There are a few devices which have full time power. The rest of the car should shut off when you have all the switches turned off. This means that the wires going to the Positive side should not make contact with the Negative side. If you were to put an Ohmmeter on it after disconnecting the battery and properly connecting the leads; you would test to find any connected circuit. The connected circuits would be the shorted circuits. Only a few like the clock and the antitheft are always on/

Ground wire from battery feels hot

Resistance equals heat. Corrosion and poor connections are resistance. Make sure the connections are clean at the battery and make sure the cable itself isn't green with corrosion. I’m happy to assist further over the phone at https://www.6ya.com/expert/jeremy_d728a59f986299fa

Our 1985 Ford Bronco has accumulated debris in the "grated" slot between the windshield and the hood. Is there a recommended way to remove this (ie -is it accessible without extensive teardown)?

That panel should come off easily. Under the hood you should see the retaining screws holding it. Might be rusty as all heck now, and screws might break off, but can always be drilled and new screws attached, when you put it back together.

Change ignition

Without the key you would have to drill the lock out. There are videos on YouTube if you need them.
