Automatic transmission not shifting gears
If have had this problem many times on Mk4 vw golf.
The transmission oil must be fully drained, frop the gearbox sump and replace the filter kit (widley available). Make sure everything is really clean, especially the oil pickup pipe and screen.
I generally measure the oil removed and refill the same amount. you must use the correct transmission oil....so check. I think its dextron3 or similar..but all stockists will have a listing for it.
There is no dipstick , the only way to test is using a scanner or trial and error ( i do not recommend the latter).
Chech vw forums for diagrams showing the drain plug on the sump...you never get all the oil out due to height of the neck and the fact that the torque convertor and oil coolers still have oil in them.
good luck

Hi. i need a few more details to help. What engine does the Golf have ect.
Gearbox
Well it could be the adjuster for the cable is worn down as well as the clutch plate is warped and if that's not your problem than check out the drive shaft and transfer carrier to see if it's not full of trans fluid or laying on a slant inside the bell mount of the transmission
Golf mk 4 1.6 1999 - slow acceleration at times.
Hi,I just want to tell the house the solution i gave to my vw golf 4 1999 1.6ltre Automatic, that was showing, slow acceleration. This slow acceleration happen when there is hold-up and i want to accelerate the golf will be dragging up to the point that other cars will pass and leave me behind. Also to climb a hill was a serious problem too.
My vw golf 4 most times off without any sign while driving.but if i start it,it pick up again.during this problem i notice that the fuel drop faster than i thought.
however, the only light showing on my dashboard is the ABS yellow light which was constant. During this problem,i google the web for solution, that why am posting my for others to learn too.
SOLUTION.
First if you unplug the airflow meter and there is NO change in Engine sound does not mean that your airflow meter is bad.My does same and its still what am using till today.
Second, the only check light was the yellow ABS light. What this means is that it can never be Engine or Sensor problem. So,there is NO point wasting money for scanning.
There problem was purely MECHANICAL PROBLEM.let me just inform you that I change my fuel filter and fuel pump which was confirm weak, but that did not solve the problem.
The problem was from the FUEL INJECTOR.I bought a caburator cleaner and my mechanic ask me to start the car.He then loosen the air vacum that is attached to the carburetor. He then throttle the car seriousely up to the point that the RPM hit the red lines. While he was doing this he was at thesame time spraying the caburator cleaner into the Caburator to clean the fuel injector too. While I was washing him doing it,my car did some lightening sound that shows that every area is clean now.
Ever since then,I have been driving this car without any acceleration problem nor offing problem.
5 error code
could be anything from a fuel issue to an igniton relay issue..
Does a 1.4 16 v vw golf have a maf
this is a later model and not a 1999 and as such it may need the engine diagnostics reading as such this vehicle has to be connected to the internet via dealers digital signature to source the problem ,even if you know what part you need and change it then it still needs programming in to the car computer this is out of the realms of a weekend mechanic and for that matter even a mechanic like myself ,so you will gin and bear it and pay the dealer and get used to this as the newer the car then the less can be done to it by anyone except the dealership.
