Yes it could be an exhaust leak especially if it’s louder when you first start it cold.

See if you have spark coming out of the coil wire first. If you don't : coil, wire, pick up coil, module or timing chain. If you do : dist cap, rotor or wires

I'd use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. How long since a tune-up? Any applicable trouble codes? In my area some of the national brand autostores will check po codes for free, if there are any? Right now, it sounds like it's getting too much fuel for some reason. Just my opinion.

I don't think you have one. You have a coil pack controlled by the cars ecm.

What engine ? 2.2 or 3.0 l ignition module maybe , is there B+ voltage at the coil ? Do you know how to test for B+ voltage with a volt meter ?

Now that you've recharged the battery, does the starter motor crank the engine over? If NO, you have the answer immediately ... the battery is kaput!

i wold clean the TB Throttel Body- first open the hatchback on the drivers side if i can recall behind the carpet next to the water bottle for the rear window, there should be a red button depress the button see if it acts write then. if not disconect the neg side battery unplug the wires clean the terminels conect the wires reconect the battery and see if that helps. the button is a emergency shut off switch in case of a reck or fender bender.
