You say it got cold, but are the roads snow- or ice-covered? If you are driving on dry, hard surfaced roads in four-wheel drive (regardless of the temperature), you are putting excess wear on your transfer case and front differential, and yes, you can get some clunking, especially in tight turns.

I had this similar problem, what you could do is pour water and see where exactly it comes from, taped around the whole thing but pay alot of attention to the part where it leaks and put something called Mighty Putty. It works great but it wont last forever. You may check on Car-iD.com to find a replacement. If you can't find anything there check at the nearest Cap World. They are definite to get you somewhere with your problem
1998 dodge 2500 5.9 transmission slipping
Hi, two main things cause this to happen. Low fluid or clogged filter, and/or faulty one way valve in the fluid pump. I have had to replace fluid pumps in cummins transmissions before and usually the torque converter along with it. Also I've heard of people installing aftermarket one way valves in the fluid cooler lines to help remedy this problem in these trucks as well with some success. Talk to a local transmission shop in your town/city about this problem, I'm sure if they know what they're doing and are a reputable shop, they'll know your problem right away and can advise what repairs can be done in further detail. But remember, check the fluid level first(if you haven't already) and when the vehicle in running warm, fill accordingly until in operating range.
