1970 Chevy El Camino starter broke teeth on flywheel. What would cause this?
several reasons
the teeth on the ring gear were damaged from continuous grinding during pinion engagement or engagement of the starter when the engine is running causing a burring of the teeth that altered the mesh ability and jammed the ring gear and pinion
metal in the teeth of the ring gear that causes a jam in rotation
starter motor not engaging before rotating
wrong no of teeth on replacement starter pinion or starter motor
1974. Why do none of the gears work?
Not much you can do yourself other than check fluid level.
A mechanic would check pump pressure, and go from there.
As old as the car is, if nothing has been done to the trans in several years, the filter or valve body could be clogged up.

Usually they are not reparable. More than likely a spring has broken. But on more than one occasion I have actually found some denomination coin in the 'buckle'. And once removed, it operated okay. If you go to replace it, it is described as a buckle.

johnjohn2's diagram is not how the '89 Corvette vacuum lines are connected. In 1989 the vacuum source for the charcoal canister is a vacuum port on the passenger side of the throttle body. Also, the A.I.R. injection solenoids/valves were combined into a single unit.
Replacing car antenna
Yes it can but I don't think you have to go that far. You should be able to reach up from underneath and remove the nut that holds it on after you remove the cable to it.
