1986 Chevrolet Corvette Questions & Answers
I have a 1986 Corvette.
Clusters are sensitive to voltage. Does it happen only at idle? Check voltage at battery while engine idles. Should be at least 12.5 vdc.
1986 Corvette Z51 coupe...standard climate
this could be either one it can be the resistor they're up on the bottom of your blower motor should be held in by 8 millimeter Bolt two of them one on each side or could we the lower motor fan High went out
Hi! I'm a new corvette owner, I own an '86
not breaking the bank is the real problem
first cheap mod is in replace the cam shaft with a torque producting cam ( not high lift or long duration as that gets to lumpy motor operation)
that will improve the engine breating with out making it a lumpy operation
next is to get a set of tuned mandrel bent extractors to assist with the better breathing cam
next is a properly balanced exhaust system (an accredited professional exhaust shop for this )
next is a decent carburation system
bigger is not better so don't think that a 750 double pumper will be better than a 55(with vacuum secondares)properly tuned as too much fuel puts out the fire.
the use of a chassis dyno and good speed shop advice will save money here)
next is a good electrical ignition system
prices are not always equal to performance
replace the stock air cleaner with a unit that allows the filter element to breath all around
so far all the items can be found from profession speed shops but try to pick one that has a chasis dyno so that you can gauge the effectiveness of what you have bought rather than just throwing money under the hood
you notice that at this stage I have not mentioned , over bored cyl;inders , increasing the stroke, port and polished , roller cam followers roller .rockers because if you want all of that you need to open the wallet wider and the engine will not be as reliable as it steps into the high performance bracket and that equals more stress on the moving parts
a smooth powerful car that has a good exhaust sound is more attractive that a lumpy loud piece of rubbish, and is more economical and reliable and will probably cost a lot less
shop carefully and use logicic in determining what you want
Vats system disengages fuel injection and starter
The resistor, unfortunately, will only bypass the key and the lock cylinder, but not the TDM that is the core of the VATS system.
The TDM is the one often faulty instead - as it happened to me.
Here is a great write-up to build yourself a full bypass that will also bypass the TDM. It is quite easy and it saved my car:
