Check connections first then fuses. There may be a faulty relay. A systems diagmostics would pinpoint problem.

Assuming it is an automatic transmission. It could either be low on transmission fluid or in need of a new transmission filter. If it is neither one of those, then it sounds like you've got an internal problem in the transmission, which is near impossible to diagnose without taking it to a transmission shop. Just make sure the truck is warmed up to normal temp, and it is kept running while you check the fluid level. It must be on the "full" or the "full-hot" mark.

THE metal cover is just a sleeve on wire. it will come off with it. try turning wire back and forth to loosen it up from plug. helps a lot to have a set of wire puller pliers

i would seriously inspect the neutral safety switch connector located on the side of the trans also make sure you have good clean connections at the starter lots of times this is damaged during trans removal but not usually when transfer case is removed but working in that area anything is possible and it seems to have developed after the recent service one quick test to see if the neutral switch is out of adjustment is try to start it in all gears it should start in neutral and park only. try holding the key in the start position and slowly move the shifter through all gears
