Car won't go over 40 mph
My car is not going over 40mph and when I drive it doesnt want to shift to 4 gear also last month when I took it for an oil change they said the transmision fluid was leaking minor problem but it has enough fluid in.and it does have a smell when I turn the vehicle on

First of all, which cooling lines aren't hooked up and why not? Your engine computer uses temperature as part of it's program to determine how much fuel to give the engine so maybe the computer thinks the engine is cold. If it thinks the engine is cold it will add extra fuel to richen the mixture like a choke used to do.Second, have you read the codes and what are they? Your car should be OBD1 which can be read without a machine. Under the dash near the steering wheel you should see a long skinny plug-in. It will have 2 rows of pins and 2 of them should be marked with an A and a B. Turn the key to the "on" position and put a ;iece of wire between the A and B. The engine light will begin to flash in a sequence of long and short flashs. The long flash is 10 and the short flash is 1. The first code you will get it 12. This says the computer is working. Then it will flash other codes. All your codes are 2 digit numbers and it will flash each code 3 time, so you will get 12,12,12,?,?,?,12,12,12. When it is done giving you codes it will flash the 12 again. To erase the codes, simply unhook the Negative battery cable for a minute or so.Once you have the codes simply type "91 Cavalier engine codes" into your search engine and about 100 pages of sites will show up that will give you the code printout. It may be. I think it may be an idle control sensor or perhaps a map sensor. I would say idle. A good way to check for air leaks though Jacob is with soapy water. Just don't get none on your electrical wires. If you have a leak, it will blow bubbles.

Your fan or heater likely shorted out and burned up, causing your one of the main fuses to blow due to the spike in current. You will need to determine what burnt up and replace it before replacing the fuse, or you may create a fire hazard or cause further equipment damage. Also double check any changes to wiring to make sure that everything is hooked up properly.

The first hing I would do is confirm the engine temp with a scan tool. If the scan tool is reading a normal temp, 200 to 220 degrees with the fan coming on at around 220 degreese, and the gauge us reading much higher than the gauge is most likely bad.
If the fans are not coming on than you need to look into that. Fuses, relays, wiring, fan motors would be the basic things to check. If you need more help with figuring out the fans let me know.
If the fans are coming on, the temp gauge is reading the same as the scan tool data that there are a couple of possibilities.
Either the system has air in it from nepot being properly bled or the headgket is bad forcing air into the system. Air will cause the cooling system to lock up. If you are try ing seeing the temp gauge spike to 260 degreese the head gasket is likely to have or will fail soon.

Car has to be jump
Just some clarification please. If the car has to be jump started then I would assume that the original battery if good is not connected properly and would suggest cleaning both the + and - terminals. If the battery is disconnected and the engine dies then the charging can NOT be good otherwise the car would still run after disconnection. So even if the alternator is good, is the charge light showing?
Even if the bulb in the dash is gone it can stop the car from charging as it supplies a voltage to the alternator. I would suggest you have it checked again in situ and get back to me again.
