1987 Volkswagen Jetta Questions & Answers
1987 Volkswagen Jetta GL fuel filter.
Use a 10 socket to loosen the bracket over the filter.
Then use a 17 and 19 to loosen the one side. Hold the filter with one and loosen the nut with the other. Beware of leaking fuel then.
Then use a 19 and 27 to loosen the other side.
Mind when you putting ot back you dont strip the thread on the new filter. U might want toto Change the copper washers as well if they worn out.

Headlight adjustment
AIMING
The procedure outlined here is intended to provide a basic adjustment only.
- Park the vehicle on a level surface 25 feet (7.62 meters) from a vertical wall. There must be a horizontal reference point, such as a line on the pavement or another wall, at a right angle to the aiming wall. The fuel tank should be about 1/2 full, tire pressures must be correct and there must be a person in the driver's seat.
- Measure the distance from the floor to the center of each headlight. Mark these heights on the wall and draw a line between them.
- Measure the horizontal distance from the reference point to the center of each headlight. Make reference marks on the wall so that X marks the center of each headlight.
- With the headlights on low beam, the high intensity zone of the light beam should be immediately below the line and about 2 inches to the right of the center of each headlight.
- If adjustment is required, remove the grille and use a Phillips screwdriver to turn the adjuster screws.
Dach lights not working but lights working
Check all fuses. Even if they look ok roll them in the fuse holder to make better contact. I believe that there is a switch that rolls up and down to increase or decrease brightness on dash, check that too.
Where is the tempature switch located
well lucky for you VW only made one engine for a Jetta in 1987, 1.8 so the temperature sensor is on top of the water outlet on the rear of the cylinder head , also called water flange, it is the sensor with the most wires, normally 4 wires.
Very high fuel consumption
Check tire pressure. Check air filter (should be able to see light thru other side). Check spark plug gap. Have engine ckecked for vacuum leaks by your mechanic.
How to put refrigerant in ac unit
There is no idle speed control vale if it's Bosch Mono Motronic.Idle speed controlled by throttle actuator that' an electric motor controlled by Ecu. On the left hand side of Throttle body.
Engine won't start
check the fuel system; fuel pump, filter, and carb or injectors. one of them has to be malfunctioning.
Wath sice of rim us the 1987 jetta standard 4
this car takes a 14" rim. you an check for your self though by looking on the drivers side door frame and looking for the tire size on that placard. thte tire size can be read as following;
Width Profile(% of width) Rim size.
195 60 R14
this is just an example and not the actual tire size.
Why would I occasionally lose power at random
1/ Massive air leak in intake pipe to throttle body.
2/ Bad electrical wire to rear of cylinder head as engine rocks on it's mounts.
3/ Oil pressure too high holding valves open....new oil pump required.
4/ Loose/cracked connection of idle air hose under manifold.
1997 Polo classic switches off
The first two things I would check would be for vacuum leaks. (Dry-rotted vacuum hoses, fittings, etc.) Another thing you'll want to check is your EGR valve. When an EGR valve sticks open, it will allow exhaust gases to enter the intake, causing rough idle and sometimes stalls. While the engine is running, tap on the EGR valve gently with the ****-end of a screwdriver and see if the problem clears up.
Being this old of a car, I'm willing to bet it's a vacuum leak, but you're the one with your eyes on it. :)
Good luck and I hope this helps! :)
I have a 1987 jetta
It could be the upshift indicator control unit relay (relay #4, second row of relays, 4th from the right). There is also vacuum switch upshift indicator, (usually connected inline of the vacuum line going to the distributor advance, with an electrical plug connected to it). Or it could be transmission switch/upshift indicator, (located on top of the transmission, towards the back of the transmission). I don't think it would be a fuse, because the upshift control unit relay is powered by ignition battery.
