I change the thermostat in my 88 GMC Jimmy and now it stalls out it won't run

Be sure the thermostat was installed correctly, and is the factory temperature unit...most of yours would be 195 Degree to open...most will not let you install backwards...but some can...do you have any leaks? Be sure gasket or gasket sealer has not affected the open/close of the thermostat...probably should replace the thermostat again with the correct one. Hope this helps.

How do I check a ground connection ? My 1988 GMC Jimmy has a new starter and again it seems to free wheel and not start.Seems to help if I put it in neutral.

You could possibly have a bad park neutral safety switch , power ( voltage ) from ignition goes thru the park neutral safety switch to the S terminal on the starter solenoid . Does your vehicle have automatic or manual transmission ? And you should have voltage drop testing on the starter circuit done . Starter Voltage Drop You could have a bad battery cable .

PUT NEW STARTER IN BUT ENGINE WONT TURN OVER

1) Low battery, not enough juice. 2) Starter housing dirty, and engine block area where it connects to. Starter gets ground off of the engine block. (Negative connection) Positive connection from battery goes to solenoid. Clean starter, and engine area where it mounts. 3) Brushes for starter are completely worn down. The click you hear/heard, is one of the last it will make before the brushes are changed. Test the starter off of the car with jumper cables, and a small jumper wire for the solenoid. Starter works you know it isn't the problem. Post back in a Comment.Regards, joecoolvette

Can I switch out the 700 r transmition for a turbo

as long as u get a turbo 350 trans that is the same length from bellhousing to tailshaft u should be able to. the only thing is the 700r trans has a t.v. cable to control the shift where as the 350 has a vacuum line that goes to the modulator on the side of trans. if your not 4 wheel drive u might have issues w/ speedo being electric vs. cable
