2003 Pontiac Grand Am - Page 2 Questions & Answers
How can I replace broken trunk spring?
Well now.
You have a "tiger by the tail".
I looked them up, and it looks like to you have 2 long steel shafts or bars that go across the inside of the trunk, that provide torque to balance the weight of the trunk lid
. You will change them out when they break.
You might do it once, and may decide "never again!"
I have done these several times, and will share this:
The job is quite dangerous, because you are working with "loaded" spring steel.
If you make a mistake, it can hurt you really bad, even to breaking a bone or losing a finger or even your eye.
Also, if one breaks, and your replace it, the other one may also break soon.
Having said that, God bless your efforts.
Why can't it do more than 80 kms?
My knowledge of the Pontiac Grand Am series vehicle prompts me to question the maintenance and upkeep of your vehicle. There are three things that come to mind when a vehicle will not go past a certain speed:
1.) routine oil changes; an experience I had with a stick shift vehicle was due to a small oil leak that caused the RPM to not go as high as too little oil was being detected and the car wouldn't go over 50 mph.
2.) restricted gas flow can also limit the ability to accelerate and achieve normal speeds under normal circumstances. Spark plug gaps and type can also play a role in this issue as well as the spark plug wires.
3.) built within the computer for the cars' electronics is a governing chip which, depending on where you live and what the car may have been exposed to(like someone trying to jump the car off and crossing the polarity) could have either modified the programming on the chip or the main board itself may have sustained liquid or other substantial damage.
I would rule out the first two before trying the third. I would verify the oil and gas pumps are working properly before going to three. I live in a small city and I am the only "known" person that works on and repairs these type boards. The sad thing is there are a few that are just not repairable. The third also requires you to take out the passenger side seat to get to the housing for the main board and also requires special tools to get it out so, if you have verified the integrity of the pumps, plugs, and wires then it will most likely be the main board.
I don't recommend this but there are several mom and pop garages that have the hand-held computer to reset the board but, if it is damaged, the reset could cause the car to become non-usable.
Hope this helps.
