Recently, shifting doesn't happen. trans remains
In most cases it is called a "3-2 Shift Solenoid" and it is located inside the tranny. I would take the vehicle to a Mercedes dealership and for about $30.00 they will confirm this by using a computer diagnostic device. I feel that most dealerships have better equipment for detecting this kind of problem. Then after you can decide on a repair garage of your choice to do the job!

Need to replace oxegen sensors on 1997 sl320
Hi,
Oxygen Sensor Location -
Under vehicle, passenger side, below seating area, front of catalytic converter, mounted in exhaust pipe.
Procedure to Replace
- The sensor is threaded into the exhaust manifold.
- It can be difficult to remove unless a special anti-seize compound is coated onto its threads.
- Torque the sensor to 30 foot-pounds using a special socket.
- A sensor that is too loose or a cracked exhaust manifold can result in a lean signal to the computer.
- Check the vents in the thimble of a replacement O2 sensor.
- There should be the same number of holes and they should face clockwise or counterclockwise like the ones on the original sensor.
- Installing the wrong sensor can result in slower cross counts.
Let me know, if needed further assistance.
Hope i helped you.
Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

GEARBOX IN 97 SL320 AUTO SLOW TO CHANGE INTO
sounds like a leaking seal inside the trans, but have a trans shop road test it to be sure, they will do that for free in most causes as they want the job of repairing it.

Top won't go all the way up.
I had the same problem. One day I opened the hydraulic resevoir under the spare tire to check the level of the hydraulic fluid and voila' the top started to work fine. It opened and closed perfectly. It has worked fine now since July. The only thing I did was open the resevoir. Perhaps there was some kind of air block!
