Overdrive switch

Overdrive should always be used unless you are climbing or descending a steep hill. You turn the overdrive off only when you don't need it.

Hi i have a nissan

your problem is your right foot, take it of the gas pedal and you wont use as much fuel, that figure seems about right, nissan quote 11kms/l however those figures are the best achievable, try running it on higher octane fuel or having an lpg system installed.

My 2001 Nissan Quest temp gauge rise to hot, cools then get hot

You better not be driving your car overheating like that and shutting off on you! It sounds like you've most likely lost all your coolant due to a leak of some sort, and your engine is overheating. I would take the vehicle to a shop make sure you don't have some kind of major coolant leak. They'll also want to do a "block-check", which is a fluid that can detect combustion vapors in the coolant, that would indicate you've blown a head gasket due to overheating. It's very bad for an engine to run without coolant, even for 10 minutes. I'd have the vehicle towed in unless the shop is right around the corner. If you'd like to check your coolant level yourself, make sure the engine is cold or at least the vehicle has been off for an hour. Checking the overflow tank level may not be good enough. You'll have to remove the radiator cap and determine if you've got any coolant in the radiator. If not use either regular pre-mixed green coolant, or if you have non pre-mixed dilute it to a 50/50 ratio coolant and water. I wouldn't continue to drive your van with it acting up like it has until you can get it checked out.

To bleed the fuel system you need to remove the plunger on the fuel rail. It is located where you hook up a fuel pressure gauge. Once it is removed have someone cycle the ignition key to the KEY ON ENGINE OFF position, or the accessories position, 2 - 3 times this will get all of the air out. Also place a tube on the fuel pressure fitting so that fuel doesn't spray all over the place. Once this is done replace the plunger and cycle the key 2 - 3 more times. This will ensure fuel is at the injectors

I had an automatic gearbox

Hi.

There are several faults that may result in the problem. Check the throttle position sensor voltage range. If the TPS is bad the transmission control module (TCM) will not know that you are opening the throttle and will not engage higher gears.
Check the solenoid for the gears that are not engaging. Check wiring from TCM to solenoids and wiring between overdrive switch and module. The transmission shift solenoid are located on the transmission in the valve body.
Check the speed sensor (VSS) located in the transmission.
If all that is OK sk the dealer to scan TCM and ECM (main computer) for issues.
Additionally if the box has been replaced with a used one, then the installed transmission may be faulty. Test all the rest first.

Regards.
