This could be a bad key transponder - or a faulty reader in the vehicle.

Replace the coils located under the ABS pump assembly, and those coil wires also. Most everyone manages to forget these as they are out of sight.

CHECK FOR SPARK AT SPARK PLUGS AT PLUGS IF NO PROBLEM IS IN THE DISTRIBUTOR OR ECM.IF YOU ARE GETTING SPARK.PROBLEM IN THE FUEL SYSTEM CHECK FUEL PUMP FUSE AND RELAY IF BOTH IS GOOD.FUEL PUMP THE PROBLEM.

Neither - there is a tensioning pulley.
You must loosen the pulley (counterclockwise) enough for the belt to be removed.

BLACK SMOKE IS A RICH FUEL MIXTURE.MERCEDES HAS THE CIS FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM.YOUR PROBLEM COULD BE IN THE DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE REGULATOR.THE MERCEDES DEALERSHIP WII HAVE TO FIX THEY HAVE TO USE SPECIAL EQUIPMENT TO WORK ON THE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM.

Change your MAS Mass Air Sensor this will exhibit the problem you have if it is dirty. You can try cleaning it, yet it is normally easier just to replace it

The early 300 SL suffered from dodgy HT leads and spark plugs if not regularly maintained, the problem with Mercedes Benz though is that the cars have so many features that it is almost impossible to diagnose without seeing the car. Some things to try (in this order) are : - Spark plugs, Ht leads, remove and clean Distributer Cap, replacement of HFM sensor (common fault), if none of these help then faults have been known in throttle valves and fuel pumps/filters
