If they are not working, meaning when you step on your brake pedal, then it is your brake light switch.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
   
2. Disconnect the wiring connector at the switch.
   
3. Remove the switch lock nut.
   
4. Remove the switch.
   
5. Install the switch and adjust it so the brake lights are not on unless the brake pedal is depressed.

This could be signs of a bad coil make sure you check all your fuses that have to do with your starting ,ignition etc if all are find it could be the coil.

Check vacuum leaks , by spraying carburator cleaner around intake manifold gasket and vacuum hoses connections . See if engine picks up the idle speed while you doing it , and if it does , locate leak and fix it. Most common , intake manifold gasket brakes.

Your question is not complete, The start key does it turn around 360 degrees? if so the ignition switch needs to be replaced, also if it's hard to start when hot, that depends or alot of variables, fuel type, clean air filter, If you say it starts when it feels like doing so, the vehicle doesn't know.Sounds like a bad connection in the ignition switch, also check and clean your ground cable on the battery . The problems are easy to fix and should not cost more that 75.00 the ignition switch is the costly part
