Recently bought '96 olds delta 88, slow starting

Along the frame rail under the car you should see the fuel lines on the driver side. Along the line around the front driver door area there should be a metal barrel, this is the fuel filter.

How do replace the power steering pump on 1996

remove the pressure and return line, the belt, remove the mounting bolts. Use a "power steering pulley puller" to remove the puller. This tool also works as an installer.

The temperature gauge rises in the red zone and

that is overheat shutdown in that cars computer. the easy way to fix this type of problem is to start cheap and replace the cars thermostat and put new coolant in it. if the overheating continues your water pump is the next to fix.

Wont start have replaced new battery no power

This clearly indicates either the connections, cables, or the solenoid/starter is bad. Unless,,, you have a bad ground.

I suggest that you spend a few minutes cleaning the ground contacts with emery cloth to make sure they are all clean & doing their job, expecially the large one going to the engine/trans as it is the one needed for cranking the engine, the small grounds provide the finishing circuit for the electrical system beyond the starting system.

Make sure your battery terminals are exceptionally clean, tight fitting on clean posts & tightened to where they are snug, then coat with grease to seal & protect.

Recharge the battery if it is not above 12 Volts. A new battery doesn't reach peak voltage until charged. Most parts stores sell the batteries2_bing.gif with the charge that they built by adding the electrolite & it usually works fine, but cold weather dictates that they should be charged before being installed to prevent excessive wear on the alternator which has to work extra hard to charge a weak battery & keep the car going with all of the accesories working.

You should also check the starter/solenoid main connections for corrosion, and while you have any cable in your hand, bend it & listen to see if you hear the corrosion inside the cable making noise. If so, replace the cable.

If you've don all of this and it won't crank, take the starter off & go get it bench tested, it or the solenoid should be the problem at this point.

t's a lot of info, but there are many considerations to the entire starting system.

Good luck

Car will not stay runing

When a problem like this occcurs in a 1996 up model car the electronic engine control will almost always store a fault code for the problem, so the 1st thing to do is have the OBD 2 (on board diagnostics generation 2) tested for fault codes, this is essential as a 1st step to track down the cause of the no start.

Have 1996 olds 88, it cranks but won't start and

taking off the rocker cover over number1 cylinder, rotate the harmonic balancer to top dead centre, both inlet and exhaust rockers should be level and under no pressure, if one is tight then it is possible the chain has jumped a link. Check your ignition timing, at top dead centre the distributer should be just about to open up to fire on number one lead, Lastly, buy some octane booster and injector/carby cleaner $8, this may be a cheap fix. hope this helps, good luck

very much sounds like a belt ,and that was the alternator light whether the same beltdrives them both or it was stalled with abit of the belt that was breaking up ,who knows ?i wouldn`t recommend you drive it dependant on the type of power steering it is ,some serious damage could result ,that would be a lot more to fix than the cost of a tow .
