My car will crank but if i hit the power locks it will die.
Do you have an alarm/anti-theft device? It sounds like that is malfunctioning and causing the problem. When you hit the locks, it's enabling the ignition lock because the anti-theft thinks someone is trying to steal the car.
Disable the anti-theft (pull the fuses or whatever you have to do) and give it a try.
FYI, power locks and windows on GM cars are notorious for wearing out and not working after 10 years or so. Every GM I've ever owned has had this problem. Windows go up and down really slow and locks will not always engage. The locks not locking could be a separate issue.
Car keeps shutting off
try replacing the crankshaft position sensor - it's a common problem on the 88's and is only about a $30 part
Do know how to put drum brakes on
First you will need a brake spring wrench. This is like a 14" plier looking tool which will uninstall springs on one end of the tool and install springs using the other end. Remove the brake shoes and mount the new shoes one wheel at a time. You will use the other wheel as a reference when putting the new shoes in place. You may have a shoe retainer assembly holding each shoe to the backer plate. A normal pair of pliers will let you depress the spring and turn the spring keeper L or R to remove the keeper. Put your finger on the center pin from the back side of the backer plate so that it doesn't turn when you turn the keeper.

I have a problem
I've heard this is a very common problem with the 88's, and the best research I've found so far suggests that you should replace the crankshaft position sensor - it's only about $30, but requires a little work.

I was taking my daughter to school and my car shuts off. I pushed it home and the next morning it started back up with no problems I have changed the spark plug, thermostat, and alternator. I do not k
it could but the chances are slim. The coilpack really consists of three seperate coils molded together. each one of the three coils feed 2 cylinders spark. in this case you usually experience just two dead cylinders if one section of the coil fails. the chances are pretty slim that all three coils would fail simutaniously EVERY time like that.
I though about this last night and it could be a few different things....
-the computers would do this same kind of thing as the longer the car would run , the more the main board in the e.c.m. would get hot and warp and eventually touch the case gounding it out for a little while but usually for less than an hour. the car would restart then.
-the computer, injectors, power windows/mirrors/locks etc., ground out through a ground splice located on the floor under the carpet just inside the drivers door. you have to pull back the carpet, expose the wiring harness track and find the long black plastic connector with a steel bar that connects all the connections going to it. this is usually consistent with when you try to roll the windows down the engine would die. also the windows would be working intermittently or not at all.
-i had ONE car years ago that was possesed! the car would die intermittently at ANY time and alot of the components we've talked about had been replaced by me or someone else. the ONLY thing that fixed that car was to remove every ground on the engine and clean them....ALL! then the stupid car finally ran ok. but you know i took that car over to the car-wash at the dealership i worked at and the car-wash guy was at lunch. sooo.... i decided to wash the car myself - right? .. bad idea. the guy had a rubber cactus on the antennae, doesn't the giant spinning brush rip the antennae , stupid cactus and all rightout of the fender. of course it's not over yet, the coax cable ripped all the way out to about 2" from the radio-why wouldn't it? well it all wrapped arround the giant brush traveling along the top of the car from front to rear and now it is beating the car to smitherines. - thnax for reminding me of that cause i forgot about it for about 15 years. nice to laugh about it now.
you may need to take your car to a tech. that has the right equip and hopefully the knowhow to use them. wish i was close to ya so i could help 'cause i'd have it figured by the time i wrote this.
I think it is probably the crank sensor but only a guess without my hands on it. you need a special puller to remove the crank pulley and a special tool or expierence lining up the sensor correctly when installing it. if you have some time and some tools try to clean all the grounds on the engine or try to find that ground bar if the windows or anything are acting funny.
Good Luck . Scott
Car will not start back up
fuel pump possibly. The are notoroious for intermittant failures. Take it to the shop to be sure.
Please only rate this as helpful or fixya unless an auto shop diagnoses it diffierently.
Air conditioner
Your vaccum tubing is loose or has has pulled from the source that that goes to the actuator that open the vents inside the car for air to flow. Its a small black rubber tubing running from the back of your engine to the inside of the car that connects to the vaccum actuator under the dash.
