1996 pajero 4WD transmission making loud noises

smoking on acceleration after idling ( at lights etc) is valve stem seals
blue smoke on acceleration while travelling is an indication of excessive big end bearing clearance overloading the oil control rings
you don't say what type of transmission you have but if it is a CV transmission it could be a failing drive belt in the transmission especially if you have added normal atf oil at any time

in alot of cases it is a ground issue in the wiring system. would try moving them around some by the tank and see if this helps to find the one and yes in alot of cases you have to drop tank but not all the way. just enough to check wires. fuse that runs gas gauge runs all gauges....hope this helps some and good luck.

Make sure about these things, tranny fluid, motor mounts are correct and also check the torque converter clutch, a bad shift solenoid in the solenoid pack (in the valve body) may cause the reverse shifting problem.

Hi guys.. For the high pitch sound, I found a solution.
Drain all the old brake fluid from the maste cyl, accomulator and the tubes, insert new fluid.. It worked for me
4 wheel drive
I have the same problem. A guy (not a mechanic) told me that it could be the matrix, which is expensive, or simply the water pipes. If it is the matrix, check on ebay before ££ spending hundreds ££ at a garage, I saw one for £60. I've got my pajero booked in at the garage.. Let's see what they say!
