That's your brake pad wear indicator ---means you need to have your brakes checked / replaced either in the front or rear.
It's a wear sensor wire ooked to the brake pad and when the pad wear down to the wire it lights up the dash warning light.

Transmission slow to go into first gear unless auto is warmed up
change fluid & filter. no dipstick, sealed tranny. can remove both pans from underneath to access filter.
It is a GM 4L30E trans. used on Isuzu Rodeo and Cadillac Catera. BMW, in their inifinite wisdom, markets it as lifetime fluid. The second biggest bunch of **** advertising that ever was. Heat and friction will wear out ANY fluid!
BTW, it will delay shifting into highest gear when cold. this is normal

I have a stripped spark plug thread on my 1998 BMW
Your most cost effective solution is a Helicoil, A Timesert is about the same maybe a few dollars more but if will be a better fix than the Helicoil. The next two options are the used head or if it is being removed a machine shop could build up and redrill and thread the hole (like new). Myself I would probably be satisfied with a good installation of the time sert but it might be a time well spent to see how much another head or the machine shop repair is going to cost you.

Battery keeps going flat
Hi Ritchie,
Bring the vehicle to an auto parts or battery store. Ask if they could perform a 'Load Test' on the battery.
This test simulates the load of turning an engine and its ability to hold a charge. It takes seconds. The results are Pass or Fail.
Fail means its your battery.
Pass means we keep looking.
Comment back with the results.
Hope you find this to be very helpful

You will need to get it diagnosed to see which wheel sensor is bad.
If both the abs and the brake light are on on the speedo dont work them the module is bad.
Also make sure the tire pressures are the same

Shifting weird fluid is good and tranny checked
That one has a GM 4l30e transmission. BMW has a shift computer. When it is cold it delays shifting to the final gear running the rpm's up to about 3500.
Change the fluid and filter anyway. Cheapest solution. Don't bring it to an idiot to do either. The larger of the two pans must be removed to access the filter. Then reinstall with a new gasket. run it up to operating temp. and top off the fluid through the side pan fill nut. You know you have the correct level when, at operating temp and the car is level, fluid comes out.
If that doesn't do it, you might be looking at a shift computer control module.

BMW 1998 528I major overheating issues.
Radiators leak and break easily on the 528i. Also, there are bleed screws that are plastic that can sheer off and create a leak on the two main hoses.
Or, the guy who did your head gasket didn't check it for cracks, so it's leaking into the cylinder chamber and burning out.

My battery keeps going flat even after a short
you have a parasitic drain on the battery, the way to check is to do a draw test using a multimeter.
This can be done at home or by any local repair facility.
Happy motoring

I would have you brakes checked. Make sure hoses aren't getting pinched when turning and that the brake pads are not worn. If you hear clunking, then check tie rod ends.

I have 1998 bmw 528i, the problem is when the ASC
Check to see if your brake pads and rotors are in good condition. Or if
you have replaced the pads yourself and have not reset the wheel
sensors this would cause the ABS Antilock Brake System light and the
ASC Automatic Stability Control light to stay on as the ASC uses the
ABS brakes with computer assistance to control the traction of the car if not fixed it can affect your rev limiter and slow performance
