well its inside, touching the COMMUTATOR in fact and do not fail
unless car has crazy high mileage, 300k+/
a dead starter has all these causes.
battery
not dead, not discharged and passes load tester.
1; bad fuses
2: bad starter relay
3: A/T transmission PRNDL switch bad (try Neutral starts.
3b: M/T transmisison clutch switch bad.
4: bad wiring to all that.
5: IMMO not happy, Immobilizer. lamp glowing wrong , and bad key
to test the starter is super easy, done now for 100 year same way.
KEY off and in pocket or work benched set, not inside car at all.
1: chock wheels.
2: hand brakes set hard (emg. brake)
3: shifter in park or M./T in Netural.
4: remove small Faston lug on soleniod
5: jumper these to pins, starter cranks but engine will not start
6: end test, bingo, super easy starter test for 10 decades.
but the above is only for starters with a solenoid on the side of starter..
