2001 Volkswagen New Beetle Questions & Answers
My 2001 new beetle 1.8 turbo started ticking and won't pull good... Did I blow my motor ?
You need to stop driving the car asap before the engine seizes. Check the oil cap and see inside if it looks all black and tarry then you have a sludged up engine. The Sludge is burnt on oil that is blocking the oil pump screen.
Sounds pretty bad but there is good news in that there is a recall for that engine for sludging. But VW will only honor it if you have proof of most your oil changes. (issue is these engines need synthetic oil and vw failed to mention this to their customers.)
If you don't have this info then you will need to clean the sludge out your self. I would first drop the oil pan and clean the pan, screen and most likely replace the oil pump. (its only bolted on). This will save your engine from failure but you are still not done. After you are done replacing the parts you need to add 1/2 quart of auto transmission fluid to your oil change. the detergents in the atf will help remove the rest of the sludge that has built up inside the engine. atf is oil so continue adding this to the oil change until you don't see any more black tar on the oil cap.
Good luck
Phil.
ps I've been down this road with a wolfsburgh Jetta 1.8t so I know the pain of sludge too well.
2001 new beetle battery drain wont start
Alternator!!! Boost the car, if starts let it run for a few min. Once the car has stayed running for a couple of min, unhook the negative terminal on the battery, if it stays running, the battery is junk. If it dies, the alternator is junk. But this is just my past experience, and it worked.Never know.
Fuses checked and now the car wont run but did before I did this.
Doing a search online came up with very little info. The only thing that sounded serious was to disconnect both battery cables and wait a couple of hours before hooking them back up.Or even overnight. The idea is to drain the memory power from the CCM in the car, then reprogram everything. Your owners manual should have a section on replacing the battery in the car and the battery in the key fob. There is a procedure to reset the alarm at that point.
