1997 Suzuki Vitara - Page 3 Questions & Answers
Please I will like to know how to set timing on Suzuki vitara engine j20
It can be done manually on all engines as long as the timing is adjustable .
You need to locate #1 cylinder your best bet is remove the spark plugs .Get a socket that fits the bolt on the crank shaft that holds the harmonic balancer witch is the pulley at the front of the crankshaft .
Bar the engine over it will turn easy with the plugs out put your finger into # 1 spark plug hole as you are turning the engine you will feel pressure this means your coming up on compression stroke at this point put a plastic straw or pencil in the plug hole .
When the piston is slightly before the top of its stroke BTDC before top dead center and i mean slightly on the compression stroke the base timing will be on the money.
Now a days the computers control many functions when it comes to timing some can't adjusted at all .
Look for the mark on the harmonic balancer mark it with chalk if you have a timing light you will be able to see it

How to access trouble code
year vehicle manufactured? if 1996 & later, OBDII scanner to be plugged into a port (typically, should be near the steering column, under the dash).
older models may have OBDI (no standard location of port) scanner specific to the make of the vehicle. search the web, on how to read manually (or without scanner) the code by counting the number of blinks of the MIL (malfunction Indicator light) (aka check engine, or service engine soon).
Autel MaxiScan MS309 OBD II Code Reader Scan Tool
Tachometer stopped working. Is it some sensor that I can fix myself?
Year/make/model?
If it has an ignition control module there will be a "tach out" wire it is usually white in color, you can check that wire for tach signal. If no signal replace Ignition control module. If it has proper signal it is likely a bad gauge in the instrument cluster.
2000. Why does it idle roughly?
Could be blockage in the fuel lines ( are you running low on fuel causing debris in tank to be sucked through fuel lines? ) fuel filter could be clogged up! Idle valve faulty! Plugs need changing! Timing out! Fuel pump faulty!
Why does shifter solenoid keep shorting out?
shifter. no year vitara. 1989 to 2012?
no symptoms.? (fire?, blowing fuses,?)
the car must be a 3 speed or 4speed automatic and not the 5 speed stick box.
and if automatic, it has feature (usa laws) called a Park-loc-kout
solenoid. located under the shifter console.
is that burning up? the actual solenoid coil, melted and now 0 ohms resistance?
It should not never do that (1 in million odds)
this solenoid?

Vehicle dies if left idling for more than a few minutes then won't re start for about 10 minutes.
wow no year, 1988? (27 years of Vitara)
wow2 no engine size stated, and is an engine question.
the sputtering is misfire,
misfire has over 50 causes.
but in pure physics it's, bad combustion.
Caused by bad spark , bad fueling or weak compression.
ever give the 60k mile tune up yet?(repeats)
ever get it scanned? with any OBD2 scan tool? see those DTC errors you are missing (no pun) out on?
is this car in USA or not? ours are OBD2 starting in 1996 but not world wide at all.... so location matters. big time.
locations have different engines and diffr. EFI systems.
that tune up replaces filters and spark parts.
Suzuki won t start
no crank!, if it cant crank, it can never start.can be many thing.1: dead battery or dirty terminals.2: discharged battery (charge it or try test known good battery)3: bad starter system.Every way, possible , is here

Can I replace a Suzuki Vitara G16b engine with a G16a engine?
no. but./....... (8v and 16v you mean i guess)
the "A" is single point injected, the B is MPI. 4 injectors.
ill guess long block and no manifolds changes
block and head only. answer.
the A TBI car will like the B engine block but the weaker TBI ECU will not like the engine air flows at all. it's tuned heavy for TBI.
the B car MPI, will run great with the 8v engine, but lack 15hp.
the A engine has the wrong head, for you car.
as are the pistons fly cut different.
I need instructions to fix an exhaust leak
This is a bit of a loaded question. I can get you instructions, however, how do you know you have an exhaust leak? If confirmed you have an exhaust leak, which side of the engine? Or, is it down further? Is there a hole in the muffler? Best thing to do is to make sure you have a can or two of PB Blaster to spray the nuts to reduce the chance of them breaking. Makes sure you have whatever gaskets needed to replace the ones in between the exhaust components you are disassembling. If there is a crack in the manifold, you will most likely want to look at a junk yard for another one as one from Suzuki will be costly and the chances of there being one available in a Dorman aftermarket brand are slim.
1992 4x4 front wheel bearing adjustment
To follow the "specs" you need a special socket with four pins (google should find a picture) to torque the bearing nut. These are crush bearings and are designed to be tighter than the older style bearings.
The bearing nut is under the locking hub, behind the locking washer that is fastened down with four screws.
Suzuki wont start
Safety switches.
-- Manual has a safety switch for the clutch
-- Automatic has one for Park/neutral. (Jiggle the shifter)
Check these, then use a mechanics remote starter to see it the problem is the starter or the wiring/switches commanding the stater.
Diagram to locate timing marks on J20 2003 Suzuki Vitara
If your J20 is like my J18, there is only one little mark on the timing chain cover and a matching mark on the Lower pulley/vibration damper. This is TDC (Top Dead Center) for #1 and #4 and doesn't have the degree markings I always expect. The mark on the cover is raised and fairly easy to find on the cover just above the top of the lower pulley. The one on the pulley is very hard to see until you clean it.
To set your timing be sure to "lock" the timing with a jumper, and use a timing light with an adjustable advance.
