If check engine light is on now get the codes.even if it's not on get codes. If it is not storing them the computer may be at fault. First thing i would do though is take the battery terminals off and clean them. A battery with a shorting out cell could also do it.

The tension you are feeling is probably the pedal spring under the dash to pull the cable back.. Open the bonnet and if you see a cable in the fire wall where the clutch pedal the you have a cable operation and it will need replacing. If you see a master cylinder next to the brake master cylinder then you have hydraulic system and it have to be bled or the master cylinder replaced Talk to a reputable service shop to have it fixed.
