Top 20 2006 Opel Astra 1.8 Questions & Answers

Well you don't actually program the key, you put the car into a condition so it will "learn" the remote to use with it.

1. First open a window (just in case) use existing key (if you have one) place in ignition and turn to ON (RUN position), do not start the engine.
2. Use the new key to lock the car, the key not the remote. Now press one of the buttons once on the new key transponder, the lights should flash, wait 10 seconds and press the unlock button, the doors should unlock and the key should be recognized by the car's security system.
3. If you are programming a second key repeat the above but press the remote button twice, three times for a third key.

Alternative Method
1. Switch on ignition; system will then remain in programming mode for 30 seconds.
2. Briefly press any button on the remote control unit while the unit is in the ignition.
3. The central locking system locks & unlocks to show that the remote control has been programmed into the car's security system as a valid remote now paired to that car.

That is your Check Engine Light. It is indicating a fault of some kind, usually of an emissions nature. Take your car to an auto parts store or a service station so they can obtain the fault codes from the car's computer and determine why the light is on and then recommend any repairs after that. I hope this helps! :) -Jason

Could be throttle position sensor. TPS. Call the Car Guys and give them the details. They're both MIT grads and they also nuts. They will know what it is. I'm just guessing the computer but it might be a connection. Good luck!

Firstly, it is hardly conceivable that an alternator fault will cause an ignition problem - or vice versa.

An alternator does get hot when it is working hard which is why they are fitted with a cooling fan (later ones have an internal fan) - so how hot does your alternator get and what makes you think it is associated with your ignition fault?

Your question is very short on detail - do you have the twin cam engine? What sort of coil pack do you have - is the type that sits direct on the spark plugs or the type that connects via spark plug wires?
What part of the coil pack is it that burns?

When you say it doesn't want to spark, do you mean the coil isn't making sparks or just that the engine isn't starting?

Hi did you do the engine overhaul yourself? if so I don't think you have any comeback, but, is a registered agent did the work, you should take it back and get them to rectify the problem at their expense as they are the agents for the Opel company in Germany. Incidentally, General Motors sold Opel and Peugeot, France bought it, so you may have a battle to get satisfaction. Good luck!!

Smell could be coming from anywhere due to how a travelling vehicle often has a slightly negative pressure inside, drawing in odours through every available gap.
Only systematic checking is likely to discover the source.

Vauxhall - Opel have long used fuel hose sections of a rubber hose covered with a fabric braid which doesn't age very well and it is worth paying particular attention to any of these fitted to your car.

My personal suggestion would be to go for these repair catalogs. I know this website that i used to get manuals from, and they have all models online.
I also brought for my 1989 BMW, such old model, they had it and it was very good manual. Go ahead, I bet.

The fact that all your electrics disappeared including all dashboard lights indicates a faulty battery/connection.

Check the battery terminals for cleanliness and tightness. Check the black earth lead for cleanliness and tightness where it connects to the engine block/bodywork. Try adding an extra black battery lead - connect it to a suitable point on the engine or bodywork
