Water or contaminants in the fuel system or possibly a bad plug wire? It can also have developed a vacuum leak at the intake manifold or an emissions system failure is possible first check your sparkplug wires that's the cheapest route! I feel like it might just be a plug wire is broken and is jumping spark or the timing belt may be stretched? Look at your mileage if around 100,000 miles then plugs and wires may be at fault? It's either connected direct or the fan speeds are not working exept on higth and to start with is try cleaning with higth pressure water the condenser and radiator hope that will help good luck

Or maybe too much fuel-backfiring in the exhaust is the burning of the unburnt fuel in the exhaust. Check the fuel pressure. You can rent fuel pressure gauges at autozone, I believe. If too low, possibly a bad filter or bad pump. If too high, test the fuel pressure regulator. a failed regulator can let extra gas into the engine through the vacuum line on it. Take off the vacuum line to the regulator, and watch the regulator for a minute with the engine running. If gas starts oozing out of the vacuum port at the pressure regulator, the regulator has failed and must be replaced. If pressure is correct, at least you have eliminated that as a problem. Check the air filter, check spark plugs and plug gaps, more or less back to basic tune up.

Check to make sure that none of the wire harnesses are touching the exhaust manifold and that the fuses and bulbs are tight in their fixtures.

Is there any check engine light?! If there is, you should read the codes. Usually, on these old cars, a bad sparkplug or sometimes a wrong one can cause these kind of symptoms

in radio mode, A./m and F/m and what about other modes. Cassette, CDDA disc? all crackle if only radio, then connect a test antenna to the radio solved?> if not the radio is bad, or DC power to the radio is bad. cuts out, does that mean, just the sound dies in all modes. (left and right speakers) or the sound and even the dial lights and station tune data is dead too. cuts means nothing with out specifics.

Depends on availability for your model tranny and area you live in. Average is around $300 for a decent used one up to around $700 for one with low miles. Best to just call around and compare.

It's more likely a fuse is blown, the tail lights are on the same fuse as the dash illumination, check the tail lights if they are not working replace the fuse marked 'tail' in the fuse panel on the inside at the left side of the dash under the cover. At the same time check the 'gauge' fuse', there is a fuse location diagram on the cover.
