coil you can test if you have a coil tester but doubt you do. CDI cant be tested. could also be a pick up coil on the stator, ignition switch, kill switch, tether if it has one.
You need to call Polaris of send them an e-mail on their website. They will be able to tell you exactly which model year and model the engine came from by the serial number. They may be able to tell you about the CDI box. If everything looks good as far as the parts interchange, and timing adjustments, then rebuild the carburetor with a new float and throttle spring. be careful to put the keeper clip on the correct groove of the needle valve and be extra careful when bending the float arm for proper travel. (Motorcycle shops have a special tool for doing this if you want absolute precision.)
The CDI box could be bad or the coil could be breaking down so maybe a new coil would fix you up they only run around 20$ cdi box on the other hand can cost an easy 100$ or better you might also try changing the oil but make sure to buy kinda thick oil cause it's cold out
fyi, something to watch out for on those is bad crank seals. will allow a lot of air in and cause the engine self destruct. before the cdi try simpler things like coil and making sure all the wiring is right. good pickup coil.
Yamaha ignition coils never go bad. It is probably the Stator/ Pulser coil (very common). You can check them with a ohm meter. You'll need the readings from a Yamaha dealership. The CDI box is very seldom bad But there is no checks that can be done on it. If everything else is fine ---than Yamaha says it must be the CDI box.(Rare)
