Latest firmware?? Where download?
http://www.eid.toshiba.com/support/swdrivers.shtml
If the boot disk came with your laptop, it should have the necessary drivers on it. You cannot burn drivers on your CD-Rom boot disk because it is not made of the material suitable for laser burning. Even if it were, it would have been "finalized" and the CD writer would not burn it.
First of all, you have to enter the BIOS Setup to see if the drive is detected. If not, then you have a hardware problem, loose connection or bad drive.
Boot to your C: drive and go to the Toshiba link (above) to download the drivers. Then install the CD-ROM via Control Panel>Add Hardware route.
hope this helps

Windows xp compatible?
It's a bog standard CDROM drive, there's nothing about it that's not XP compatible.
Check and make sure the connectors are seated properly.
Check the firmware, there is an update, try http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R20018&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=19847
This drive is reported to have CD-RW issues, but everything else should be fine (I think the firmware fixes that)
If your still having problems, its' probably a bad drive.
Toshiba washing machine model AW-DK1700WMM has turn on, beeps with error code EL then shut down within 5 seconds, how can I slove this problem?
To fix the EL error code:
* Make sure the door is completely closed and latched securely. A loose or broken latch can cause the error.
*Examine the door lock for any damage, dirt, or debris that could prevent it from working properly. Clean the area thoroughly.
* Turn off the washing machine, then unplug it for a few minutes. Plug it back in and restart it. This may resolve communication issues that trigger the error.
* Examine the wiring connections between the door lock system and the control panel. Faulty connections, such as loose or damaged wires, can disrupt communication and lead to the error message.
