I ran out of gas
The problem was probably not the regulator, it's the OPD valve in the propane tank. OPD valves came about 6 or so years ago. They are an overfill prevention device. The key to overcoming your problem is fairly simple. Turn the tank valve OFF, disconnect the grill hose from the tank. Wait 5 minutes and reconnect the hose to the tank. Now, here"s the real secret (do this very time you turn the tank ON). Open the tank valve VERY, VERY SLOWLY (Slow motion, slow), until the tank valve is fully open. Starting with the burner farthest from the tank, light it and turn it to its highest setting. If the flame height appears to be normal, do the same thing with the remaining burner(s). If all the burner's flame heights appear to now be normal, you have solved the problem. Just remember to do this every time you turn the tank valve ON.
Hope this advice solves your problem. Please let me know and please don't forget to rate my response to you. Thanks and Happy Grilling!!
I have a stainless steel Kenmore propane grill,
With all the you described, your best bet is to replace the grill hose/regulator assembly. It's not expensive and it's not difficult to do. You can find the hose/regulator assembly at any home center or hardware store that sells gas grills. The assembly is universal, but take your old one with you for comparison purposes.
As far as replacing the burners are concerned, that's not difficult either. And you may be able to find the replacement burners at
www.sureheat.com , as they made the Kenmore grills for Sears. And yes, the scenario you gave for removing the burners is correct.
Hope this helped you and you will be kind enough to give my response to you, a positive rating.
Happy Grilling!

Be sure the new battery is turned in the right direction. Most of the time, the + end should face up. Also, check to make sure the grounding wire is still attached.
Flame volume does not change much from low to high
Smokers use much lower levels of heat to do the job, if you have a friend with a smoker ask their advise. I do turkeys and fish in my smoker and between 225 and 275 degrees is normal. The smokers do the job over a long period of time as opposed to a grill, which can have temperatures for a steak of around 500. Also your manual will give you guidence as to appropriate temperatures, if you have a question as to the temperature indicator (if equipped) add a "standalone" thermometer under the hood.
Will not stay lit,I have a new gas tank and it
Turn off the propane tank and disconnect the hose from the tank. Wait 5 minutes, reconnect the hose and turn the tank valve on very, very slowly, until it's completely open.
Now light each burner one a time and turn it to high. If the burners all light and the flames remain burning on high for more than a few minutes, you're back in business. Just remember to turn the tank valve on very, very slowly after turning it off each time.
If the above didn't solve the problem, are you sure you tank gas a significant amount of gas in it?
If that's the case (empty tank), when you replace it, do exactly what I said above when you connect a full tank to the grill hose.
Hope that solved your problem. Happy Grilling!

You may need to remove the gas tank from the cooker and open all valves and close them back tightly. Then reconnect the tank and turn the valve on SLOWLY just a hair. The new tanks have a safety device inside that shuts down the flow if the pressure goes out too fast.
