How far away can the unit be from the magnetic
Usually not much more than 1/2" Howver, if the room is very quiet you can usually move the magnet close to the body (or other magnet) and hear a very faint sound when the magnet makes and breaks the connections. This way you can test the distance and have a better idea of how far away it can be. You may need to get your ear right up to the units to hear the faint sound. Like a faint "twing" sound or "click" sound.

Help with wireless window security alarm
"Zone not ready" indicates the windows sensors are not seeing the magnet piece to indicate the window is closed. Are your sensors built into the window jams or are they external wires you can see?
If you have external wires, look for broken wires or broken/missing magnetic bars.
Did the painters paint the window jams? If so, they may have painted over a sensor, though paint usually does not affect the functionality of a magnetic sensor.
Look for the broken wires or broken/missing magnets.
Also - you should be able to bypass the window zones and set the alarm. Instructions for bypassing a zone should be on the alarm head or available online.
