there can be a number of reasons why a disc cannot be read. I will give you a link to my tips on how this can be fixed.

Also I will write some additional information here.

1. Check and see if the motor is spinning.
2. If the motor is spinning you might have a issue with the laser optical itself. Or the laser motor witch moves the laser back and forth.

A. Try a cleaning kit first
B. opening up the unit and see if the laser is being moved , Careful this is a class 1 laser device and an be dangerous if you do not feel save on this bring it to a expert.

Simply unplugging the unit or restarting its software WILL NOT HELP you must consider AGE,DUST,DEBRIS in the factor here.

9 times out of 10 its best to buy a new player then trying to fix a old one. DVD players go for under $30 bucks, good ones go for $75 or greater, To fix the unit your going to have trouble with finding parts etc,etc

Problem is a DVD mechanism, if you are capable replacing it by yourself it make sens to repair the unit. I've seen parts here.

The Integra DPC-8.5 changer (as opposed to the DPS-8.3 single-play unit -- not sure which you have, as you mention DPS-8.5, a non-existent model) and most of the integra line of players, will sometimes be thrown into brainlock by out-of-step shutoffs. They will usually respond to the Integra/Onkyo instruction manual's directions to turn it off (you're already done that), then unplug the power cord from the back of the machine, wait a few seconds (make it 30 to be safe), then plug it back in and turn it on via the standby switch. The screen should display its welcome message, cycle through startup, and being working again. It is very much like rebooting a PC. In fact there is little difference.

If this doesn't work then something has gone wrong inside and probably has nothing to do with your shutdown method on the way out the door. These things do happen. Hopefully by now you've already figured this out. If not, give it a try. It usually works.
