Do you have a side imaging transducer? If so, mounting to the inside of a fiberglass hull will not work. The transducer mounting needs to be as flat (pointed downward) as much as possible and use the slow curing epoxy that would come with the unit. If you cannot find the problem, contact the manufacturer for support.

I would leave 12 inches between but do not put the speed sensor near the prop wash.

read the user manual as to how to calibrate the unit remember that it reads the distance from the sender unit to the sea bed/river bed and not from the display unit

I assume you're talking about a transom mount transducer. Best if the leading edge of the transducer is even/level with the hull and tilts slightly down in the back or trailing edge of the transducer. Also try to eliminate a gap between the leading edge of the transducer and the hull.
