hi Janet.
this link should show you step by step on what to check.
https://www.dyson.com/support/dc56/dc56-dyson-hard/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-makes-a-pulsating-noise-dc56/not-resolved-blockage-checks-dc56

found this on the internet.

I would suggest that this is a blockage of some kind as the pulsating is caused by a lack of airflow (the motor is protecting itself by pulsating and then ultimately cutting out).
I would recommend looking at the following video which will take you through a methodical way of checking this. The model in the video is a DC59 but applies to most cordless models: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdnu4yk-5vI

Furthermore, I would check the bin inlet to make sure that the one-way door/flap is not jammed as this also can cause the problem.
If you continue to have difficulty, please give the Dyson Helpline a call on 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA), 0800 298 0298 (UK). Our experts will be happy to talk you through some further diagnostic checks when you have your machine easily to hand.

Hi Just a quick question and I will check back later to see if you replied please be patiant and I will be on this after I check the messages. But are you sure the motor needs replaced, did you know there is a reset for this in the handle? There is a reset button under the cover that houses the on/off switches. remove the handle/wand and look on the back (where the top of the hose sits) for 2 screws (its a torx/star head screw size t10 i believe). remove them and locate 4 small locking tabs that hold the switch cover to the frame of the vacuum. Depress them and pop the cover off (2 towards the top and 2 towards the bottom). Youll see 3 switches (2 square red buttons and one small cylindrical shaped one). Push the small red one (the one to the left if my memory serves me right). you should hear a click. if you do than the switch is reset. if not check all connections to all 3 switches. if you see nothing loose or not connected, you may need a new brushbar motor. et me know how you want to proceed.

Was the filter still damp or completely dry when re-installed?
Dampness could turn dust into a thick layer of gunk on the filter.

The rubber belt that turns the brush has probably broken. The old vacuums were built to last whereas the new and "better" vacuums were made to be repaired frequently.

The filter may be clogged restricting the airflow. If the filter is over a year old it may need replaced.

It could be a bad brushroll motor, a bad switch in the handle or the ball or a loose wire. Inspect and test these areas to try to find the problem.
