Coleman lantern #5312 spiral bulb. problem:
Most times the problem with these is that the batteries, though they show fully charged, are in poor condition.
Test: Count the cells in this unit and multiply by 1.2 test for that voltage, 4.8 is common, at the batterypack and turn the light on, if the voltage falls below 1 volt per cell, the battery protection circuit will engage and turn the light off. This is a battery problem.
If the voltage stays relatively steady, the bulb is the second item to be a common failure. Shine a flashlight across the base of the bulb where the 2 ends enter the white base. It the tubes are pretty blackened, your bulb is likely bad.
I don't have the specs for that switch, but it's a pretty simple device, it connects power from the batterypack to the inverter board or to the nightlight. It's simple to test with either an ohm meter (power disconnected) Or a volt meter, (Power connected)

I have a coleman 5317 RC series lantern that wont go into the dim mode what can I do
Hello. I've just looked at several Coleman lamps, some have krypton bulbs (mainly battery powered), some spiral fluorescent bulbs (mainly mains powered/charged). If this one is yours
http://www.coleman.com/Parts/100/parts-lanterns/5317-702/remote-control-pack-away-family-size-lantern# then it appears yours has a spiral fluorescent bulb. Gas discharge bulbs commonly are fired up by an initial high voltage pulse then followed by a continuous ac medium voltage (say 80 volts or so) to give a FIXED LIGHT OUTPUT.
THIS DOES NOT ALLOW CONTROLLED DIMMING. Dimming can usually only be done on an INCANDESCENT TYPE bulb eg an older type tungsten filament bulb. These are however much less efficient.
So in summary, if you do have a fluorescent bulb, I don't know why your remote indicates you can dim it. You could try switching the bulb for an incandescent type, but this should only be attempted by qualified persons. Check over the user manual again. Good Luck.
