You can connect the permeate line to a 3/8" tank float without any issues.

When the tank float valve blocks the water flow, the pressure will increase in the line until the high pressure switch shuts down the pumps. As the valve opens, the pumps will turn on automatically.

Glad to know the issue was fixed. However, it is normal to have elevated levels of salt in water downstream of the water softener since the softener replaces calcium, magnesium and iron with sodium ions. Best way to get rid of sodium from drinking water is to use a reverse osmosis water filter at your kitchen sink, point of use.

Here are some things to look at if your ice maker is not working.

  1. water inlet valve might be defective.
  2. water filter might be clogged. Try changing the water filter.
  3. less than 20 psi inlet water pressure (low house water pressure).
  4. ro is not tubed properly (check tubing diagram attached below).

If you want your water to have more minerals (increase hardness), it is advisable to install a backwashing calcium carbonate filter at the point of entry.

If you're getting salty water from a reverse osmosis permeate line, that means the ro membrane is ruptured or the membrane o-ring is deformed.
Replace the o-ring and if that does not solve the problem, replace the membrane as well.

Soak the filter sump in a tub of hot water mixed with vinegar and let the housing expand for a few minutes. This should make the filter sump easy to screw off.

Check if you have accidentally pushed the float switch to the bottom.
Secondly, make sure the brine drum is not dirty.

The softener model may be programmed to back-flush or do a resin bed recharge as an initialization step when first turned on. Back-flush lasts around 15 minutes. Recharge may take up to 1 hour. During this time, softener should let water bypass the resin bed. After the softener completes this step, it will automatically route water through the resin bed to create softened water.
