The metal detector does not expose you to ionizing radiation, e.g. x- rays, neither do the wands that are used for individual screening. Metal detectors operate by generating a low-intensity magnetic field that passes from one side of the detector to the other.

The operation of metal detectors is based upon the principles of electromagnetic induction. Metal detectors contain one or more inductor coils that are used to interact with metallic elements on the ground. Stock systems were usually an option with the older registers. It is very likely that it can not be programmed for stock without adding an extra memory chip and possibly a serial add on board to work with stock software. Since the TK2300 is pushing 20 years old now, you are unlikely to find any accessories for it. Stock systems were normally set up by the supplier at time of sale since they were complicated and expensive. Unless you are a large store, it is much simpler to use the quantity sold figure on your end of day reports and check it against your invoices and remaining stock. Otherwise, buy a POS system instead which has it all built in.

Exactly the same way the detectors on a beach work.
When electricity flows through the transmitter coil, it creates a magnetic field all around it. If you sweep the detector above or alongside a metal object (such as this old grey spanner or a gun), the magnetic field penetrates right through it. The magnetic field makes an electric current flow inside the metal object and causes a change in the flux of the coil that is detected by a sensor inside the detectors electronics.
