If Brinkmann say the grill can't be converted there must be a reason and it would be unwise to jury-rig a conversion kit for another grill. Gas is an explosive substance, plus the mix of gas to air has to be in the correct percentage for a good burn.

GFI means Ground Fault Indicator suggesting you have a short or faulty ground connection somewhere.
I suggest be very careful and have this checked by a qualified electrician.

I have found that when using my electric smoker and cooking ribs or brisket I use the gadget that you can purchase that puts your food on end thereby exposing all the meat surface to smoke.The item I use I made myself but similar racks can be puchased. I would not use a pan at any time , if nothing else place directly on a rack.

Maybe the grill is not jetted for propane and is jetted for butane and maybe you have the wrong regulator providing the wrong gas pressure, maybe the regulator is faulty.

I suggest you discover what your grill needs and compare it with what it has.
