If your desktop has been overheating for any reason you will need to look at buying a new processor (cpu), power supply (if wires have been damaged from heat or voltage spike), or possibly a new motherboard. but does only in windows running, right?

The PC autodims the screen for 2 reasons (by design)
a battery weak. or setup to run dim when on battery only mode, in windows power settings,
reason 2, the screen camera is used to see when the room is dark, if yes, it dims. this to is a a setting in power settings of windows.

click start, click control panel,click power icon.
click advanced, see "power" settings
you will discover many things are (on battery do X)
all laptops with windows, set it as you want.
