Taking a flying guess the wire could have two possible functions - either providing the radio with additional illumination when the vehicle lights are on or if the illumination is permanent it could dim the display, etc. when the lights are switched on.

Hi i removed the positive on the battery terminal and tried the stereo still no buttons work although the source button and volume work but thats it any ideas thank you

Turn on the car so the radio is flashing "Protect." Look on the front / removable face of the stereo. On it you will find a small round hole - that's a reset button. Find a small paper clip, unfold the clip and stick it gently into the hole. The "Protect" will stop flashing, and Kenwood will be displayed. Unfortunately all your settings/presets will be gone, but at least the stereo is working again!

You can try to reset every thing again by disconnecting it from the battery for 5minutes then hook it back up it should reset everything
