popping in the front end check for CV joint wear, if a boot to the axle is torn, moisture messed it up. The popping could be the dried roller bearing on the joint out of lube.

CV joint is packed with grease and protected by the rubber or plastic boot. It does not require any maintenance and supposed to last very long provided that protective boot will not get damaged. Hello
